Barcelona sack Ronald Koeman after 1-0 loss to Vallecano

Tensions have returned to Barcelona once again, and Ronald Koeman is the manager under threat. The Dutchman recently lost to Bayern Munich 3-0 in their opening fixture in the Champions League, and continued the streak of losses against the German giants.

Koeman had this to say when he had to defend himself in front of the press when asked about his future at the club.

“In the Champions League, no miracles can be expected. The defeat against Bayern must be seen in that light,” said Koeman.

“The team must be supported, in words and actions.”

Joan Laporta has reportedly drawn up a shortlist to replace Koeman in the next few weeks, and it includes the likes of Xavi Hernandez and Erik Ten Hag of Ajax. The Barcelona president wants to rebuild the entire team and restore it to its former glory.

A Barcelona match ten years ago would’ve been one of the most difficult fixtures for any club in the world. However, the same club is a fraction of its former self now that they have lost a significant portion of their star players such as Lionel Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and Carles Puyol by virtue of age or otherwise.

Koeman has stated that he wants Laporta to back him since he accepts the burden of rebuilding the club. However, the tense situation between the president and the manager of the first team might just end in the latter being replaced if the results don’t turn out right in the next few fixtures.
