Roughly 5,000 chips can fit into one wafer. Thus, this facility will essentially create three billion chips annually, the Union’s minister of electronics and information technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated during a press conference following the Cabinet meeting.

Other chip plants approved by Cabinet with an investment of Rs 1.26 lakh crore

For a projected cost of Rs 1.26 lakh crore, the Union Cabinet approved the bids for three semiconductor plants, two in Gujarat and one in Assam.

Since the announcement of the Rs 76,000 crore chip subsidy package in December 2021, this is the first semiconductor manufacturing project that the Indian government has approved.

An assembly plant in Sanand, Gujarat, which would cost about Rs 7,600 crore, is the other semiconductor project that the Union Cabinet accepted today. This project is a collaboration between Stars Microelectronics in Thailand, Japanese chip manufacturer Renesas, and India’s CG Power. An estimated Rs 7,600 crore will be invested in this project overall.

According to the government, the three projects unveiled today will create 20,000 direct jobs and over 60,000 indirect jobs.
