Tata Group is actively advancing plans for the establishment of a semiconductor processing facility in Assam, signaling a substantial investment of around ₹40,000 crores, as disclosed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. During a public event, he shared that Tata Group, following constructive dialogues with the state government, has initiated the final approval process from the Central Government, with optimistic expectations for a prompt response.
Tata Group’s Semiconductor Venture
The conglomerate’s subsidiary, Tata Electronics Ltd, has formally submitted an application for the establishment of an electronic center in Jagiroad, proposing an outlay of ₹40,000 crores to the Government of India. Jagiroad, located in the Morigaon district and approximately 55 km from Guwahati, serves as a key focal point for these strategic developments.
Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the positive outcomes arising from the initial discussions between Tata Group and the state government regarding the semiconductor assembly and packaging plant. Satisfied with the progress, Tata Group has taken the next steps by approaching the Central Government. Pending a smooth approval process, a substantial investment is anticipated, promising a favorable industrial environment for the state. The Chief Minister expressed optimism, citing ongoing communication with the Central Government and anticipating final approval within the next one to two months.
In addition to the economic investment, Tata Group has presented a proposal to the state government, seeking collaboration to train 1,000 individuals for potential employment opportunities within the semiconductor facility. Chief Minister Sarma acknowledged the transformative shift, highlighting that the longstanding question of why the electronics and IT industry had not established a presence in the state is now being definitively addressed.
In a social media post, Chief Minister Sarma extended gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continuous guidance in steering the transformative journey of the state. The groundwork for these substantial developments was laid when the state cabinet approved the Assam Semiconductor Manufacturing and Electronic Production Policy in August, paving the way for this noteworthy economic venture.
