ICC T20 World Cup semifinals: New Zealand vs England in 1st semifinal, Pakistan vs Australia in the 2nd one

T20 World Cup 2021 has finally got its semifinalists, which is held in UAE. Sadly, India couldn’t register its name in the semifinals for this season but surely there are more opportunities to come. Afghanistan also got dismissed from the tournament as the team got defeated by New Zealand on Sunday. The kiwis are all set to play against England in the 1st Semifinal and Pakistan will be playing against Australia in the 2nd semifinal.

India got dropped from the tournament as Afghanistan lost against New Zealand

Kohli and his team lost the first two very important matches against Pakistan and New Zealand. India will be playing against Namibia on Monday but unfortunately, that could not pave India’s way to the semifinals. The last time India got knocked off before the semifinals were in WT20, Sri Lanka.

This is the 3rd time New Zealand is qualified as a semifinalist in T20 World Cup following 2007 and 2016.

Teams that have made it to the semifinals most of the times

    Australia- 16 times

    India, Pakistan- 15 times

    New Zealand- 14 times

    England- 13 times

Pakistan is the only team of this season that has won all 5 matches in group stage levels which helped it top the points table in Group 2. Pakistan on Sunday beat Scotland and finalized the knockouts list.

England lost one game against South Africa but still, it ranked number 1 in group 2. Despite defeating England, South Africa still couldn’t make it to the semifinals, the reason is they have a lower run rate (NRR) than England. Though England, Australia and South Africa have reached 8 points but they two could only make it to the semifinals. Australia with an NRR of +1.216 had a victory against West Indies and finished at second place.

    T20 Semifinals schedule

England vs Australia will be held at Abu Dhabi on 10 November. (7:30 pm IST)

Pakistan vs New Zealand will be held at Dubai on 11 November( 7:30 pm IST)

India gets eliminated from T20 World Cup 2021 as New Zealand wins against Afghanistan

India got eliminated from T20 World Cup on Sunday. New Zealand beat Afghanistan on Sunday which confirmed India’s elimination from the T20 World Cup.

It was a big shock to the organizers because India has the biggest broadcast market and the team’s weakness is also predicted with the world Cup’s format and schedule. India’s first two matches were scheduled on Sundays. The first one was an anticipated match against Pakistan.

The batting and bowling performances both were not up to the mark. Pakistan won by a huge margin( 10 wickets) which was unpredictable. The next game was against New Zealand which India lost as well.

In the third game, India did defeat New Zealand and scored a good net run rate (NRR).In its fourth game against Scotland, India had a major victory that took India’s net run rate (NRR) to +1.619.

India’s chances in the semifinals were actually dependent if Afghanistan had won the match against New Zealand. With the latter’s win in today’s match, there is no chance of India qualifying for the semifinals. The hope of bringing back trophy after 2007 remained a dream for this year as well.

Cricket is the most popular sport in India and the second most popular sport in New Zealand. Still, the kiwis have defeated India in the semifinals of 2019 in a 50 over World Cup, in the world test Championship and now for the T20 World Cup.

Since 2007, the Men in Blue have been to the semifinals in every edition but they failed to lift the ICC T20 trophy.

India finished as a runner up in ICC T20 World Cup 2014 and lost two semifinals in 2015 and 2016 T20 World Cup.

Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, India lost the 2017 Champions Trophy and 2021 World Test Championship final. They also got defeated in the 2019 Cricket World Cup semi-final to New Zealand.

This is the last season Virat Kohli is having as a captain. Rohit Sharma is most likely to be the next captain.

Rohit Sharma as the skipper for India in both T20 and ODI?

A significant week is coming for the Indian cricket team as the selection committee will be choosing India’s team for the home series against New Zealand. The selectors will officially announce the next white-ball captain. Well, it is an open secret now that the team will be led by Rohit Sharma after Virat Kohli.

Earlier Virat Kohli has announced that he will walk out as a captain from the T20 format and from IPL. After India’s unsatisfactory performance in ICC T20 World Cup, the ODI captaincy is likely to be given to Rohit Sharma.

Rahul Dravid who will be the team’s next coach will have his say about the matter. He isn’t the official coach now but he’s most likely to succeed Ravi Shastri. He has applied for the post although the formal proceedings are yet to be completed.

Rohit Sharma all set to be the caption in both T20 and ODI formats

The next T20 World Cup will be held in 2022 in Australia. A 50 over series will commence in 2023. The BCCI believes having two sets of captains for each series will create a lot of scepticism and they favour the idea of having only one captain. Rohit is currently vice-captain of the team and soon he will be promoted to the skipper’s spot.

Why Rohit Sharma is the best choice for skipper’s position?

Selecting Rohit Sharma as the next captain will be a wise decision that may be fruitful. Here’s why:

    1. He’s the most successful IPL captain as his team Mumbai Indians won 5 times.
    2. He has an influence in the team decisions since he was the vice-captain.
    3. Under his captaincy India has won 15 matches out of 19.

As a captain, Rohit has a better record than Virat. The team needs a good change and he is the perfect choice for it.

The New Zealand’s tour of India

Top 5 reasons for India’s poor performance in ICC T20 World Cup

Team India has failed to perform well in the previous matches against Pakistan and New Zealand. Starting from the Indian Cricketing Fraternity to the commoners who love cricket, all of them have disappointment in their eyes. There’s win and loss in every game and it should be taken sportingly. Still, we have listed some factors which may be responsible for the team’s substandard performance.

The schedule of different tournaments in a row gave zero refreshment to the players

The Indian cricket team resumed playing last year against Australia. Since then, there has been no stopping. The team continued to play home series against England, where India played 3 ODI’s, 5 T20I’s and 4 tests.  India played WTC Final and four Test matches against England prior to IPL. The players got a gap for just 10 days before the T20 World Cup commenced. The lack of rest and refreshment took a toll on players, both physically and mentally.

The “Not so wise decisions” made by team management and selectors

The selection of the players for the T20 World Cup has been a hot topic, prior to and post the tournament. Players like Deepak Chahar and Yuzvendra Chahar were left out by the team even when they had top-notch performances in recent months.

The inclusion of Hardik Pandya is questionable since he lacked proper fitness and form. Some sources suggest that it was MS Dhoni who brought him to the team for this tournament. The shuffled batting order has brought in horrific results.

    Top-order failure

The failure of top-order was visible when India played against Pakistan. Rohit Sharma made no runs, KL Rahul got out scoring 3. Virat accomplished his half-century but his strike rate (116) wasn’t very appealing. In the next match against New Zealand, the order changed but the performance degraded. The trio rolled for only 14, 18 and 9 runs leaving up to much for the middle order batters.

    IPL being their favourite

The members of the Indian team speak highly about the Indian Premier League and its paycheck. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have the highest packages in the league. The BCCI and the players knew about the intensity of IPL before the T20 tournament but still took no action towards it. Former cricketer Wasim Akram stated, “They think IPL is enough, not taking international cricket seriously.”

The failure of Indian bowling attack

The bowlers strived to make an impact in both matches. Pakistan had 152 to chase and they succeeded without losing a single wicket. Jaspreet Bumrah had a good performance against New Zealand as he struck twice. The other bowlers could not make an impression and the kiwis finished the game in 15 overs.

T20 World Cup 2021: India on the verge of Exit after getting demolished by New Zealand

All the cricket fans around the world were expecting a close contest between India and New Zealand. Owing to the fact that both the teams were coming off a loss in their first T20 World Cup game.

However, it was New Zealand who stepped up on this big occasion as they displayed a terrific overall performance to win against India. The Blackcaps outclassed this Indian side in every department today.

Getting into the details of the match, India made two changes as Shardul Thakur replaced Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan came in place for an injured Suryakumar Yadav. Consequently, the Men in Blue’s bad luck with the toss continued as the Williamson won toss and elected to field first.

Interestingly, Virat Kohli and the Indian think tank decided to promote Ishan Kishan at the top of the order along with KL Rahul. However, this move failed miserably as Ishan Kishan was dismissed cheaply by Boult in the third over.

Subsequently, in a span of few overs KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma departed and India were in a big spot of bother. India’s early collapse looked extremely similar to the one against Pakistan and all hopes lied on the Indian captain once again.

Although Virat was unable to replicate his form in the last innings as he threw away his wicket to Sodhi while accelerating the scoreboard. Thereafter the New Zealand bowlers bowled a tight line and cramped the Indian batsmen. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja added some runs to help India cross the 100 mark and set a target of 111.

New Zealand Batsmen comfortably chase the Target Set by India to win their First T20 World Cup Game

After a poor batting performance, India needed a miraculous bowling display to defend 111 in 20 overs. However, the New Zealand batsman didn’t give any chance to the Indian bowlers throughout the game.

Even though Guptill was dismissed at 20, Mitchell along with captain Kane Williamson built an excellent partnership.

After Guptil’s breezy start, Daryl Mitchell tookover and smashed the Men in Blue. Unlickily the Kiwi opener fell one run short of his half century as Bumrah dismissed him. However, Bumrah’s breakthrough came too late and New Zealand chased this total in 14.3 overs.

This defeat means that team India’s qualification to the knockout stage hangs by the thread. They have to depend on other results and win all their remaining games. Meanwhile, New Zealand climb up the table and are currently placed second in Group 2.

Indian hockey team starts Olympics campaign with 3-2 win over New Zealand

In an exciting first fixture for the Indian Hockey Team in Tokyo, they managed to get the better of New Zealand with a 3-2 victory.

New Zealand took the lead early with Kane Russell scoring in the 6th minute. Rupinder Pal Singh opened the scoring for India in the 10th minute, and Harmanpreet Singh followed it up by scoring a brace, with two goals in the 26th and 33rd minute. Despite getting the early goals, goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was the vital player for India as his heroics prevented New Zealand from getting a late equaliser, and helped India win their first match at the Olympics.

The first quarter was fought very intensely, much like the second. And while India were on the defensive in the initial stages, they found the freedom to express themselves more offensively in the following quarter. A lapse in defense saw New Zealand level things up in the 43rd minute, but Sreejesh made two crucial saves to deny the Kiwis a chance to equalise again, being 3-2 down.

Chief Coach Graham Reid had this to say after the victory:

“Winning three points in a competition like the Olympic Games is really important. I think we had a good second and third quarter but the first and fourth we struggled a little bit. When we watch the video later today, we will be able to find out what we need to get better at and surely there are going to be things we learn from today too.

But at the end of the day, we haven’t played for 3-4 months in an international competition, that’s the reality. As far as the weather was concerned, the players handled it really well. We probably could have put away the first few opportunities we created. It may have made the game a little less close. I think that is what we need to focus on. We did well in converting the PCs, but we need to look at reducing the numbers (of PCs) we were giving away.”

India will face Australia on the 25th in their next match.

After the rain stopped, Latham and Conway continued to bat till tea following which they reach the 70/0 mark but shortly after that Tom Latham goes out after scoring 30 runs and the wicket was taken by R Ashwin.

Devon Conway reaches the half-century mark but Ishant Sharma strikes and Conway gets caught at mid-on after scoring 54 runs.

After which the play stops due to bad light.
