Greg Stewart’s Scottish Homecoming: From Mumbai City FC to Rangers Reunion

Stewart’s football journey has taken him from the vibrant fields of India back to the familiar grounds of his boyhood club. The forward made his mark in the 2020-2021 season when he played a pivotal role in securing a title for Rangers, breaking a nine-year gap and ending Celtic’s domination. This impending return marks a significant chapter in Stewart’s career, bringing him full circle from playing part-time for a Scottish third-division club to being a triumphant force at Rangers.

During his stint with Mumbai City FC this season, Stewart showcased his prowess in nine matches, scoring two crucial goals, and contributing to a total of 46 appearances. In a recent match just three weeks ago, possibly his final game in India, Stewart left an indelible mark by scoring, providing an assist, and earning a red card in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Mohun Bagan Super Giants. Now, all eyes are on May as the 33-year-old forward is poised to pen a new chapter with Rangers, adding another exciting layer to his illustrious footballing tale.

The current status regarding Mumbai City’s decision on selling or terminating the contract of the player remains uncertain. Stewart has been given the option by the club, and according to reports, the player is currently deliberating on what course of action would be most beneficial for him.

Reportedly, several clubs in both England and Scotland are competing to secure the player’s signature. In November, the former head coach, Des Buckingham, left the Islanders to join Oxford United.

Greg Stewart: A Legend’s Farewell from the Indian Super League

In the annals of the Indian Super League (ISL), Greg Stewart stands as a true legend, departing as one of the league’s finest foreign players. To add to his illustrious achievements, Stewart was honored with the coveted Player of the Season award in 2021-22.

    Versatility on Display

Stewart, primarily known for his role as an attacking midfielder, showcased his versatility by occasionally donning the striker’s mantle for the Islanders. Chennaiyin FC

Chennaiyin FC has faced a challenging start under the familiar face of Owen Coyle. Notably, they have conceded the highest number of goals (22) in the league, signaling a crucial area for improvement during the break. Coyle, known for his adeptness in working with young talents, has a group of promising youngsters in the squad whom he is keen on grooming and developing.

However, the journey so far has been a roller coaster for the team, struggling to find stability on the field. The midfield and full-back positions have emerged as pain points, demanding a nuanced approach and players who seamlessly integrate into the squad.

As the team aims to solidify its position in the ongoing season, the fans eagerly anticipate further moves that could fortify the squad.

Given Coyle’s familiarity with the league and its players, there’s a possibility that he may leverage the winter transfer window to bring in players of his preference.

East Bengal FC made significant strides in the summer transfer window, evident in their improved gameplay. Despite a setback of three consecutive losses, the team staged an impressive comeback, remaining unbeaten in the last five matches and showcasing defensive prowess with four consecutive clean sheets, totaling five for the season – a notable improvement from the three achieved in the entire last season.

However, the primary challenge lies in chance creation. Despite having notable players like Nandhakumar Sekar, Mahesh Singh, Borja Herrera, and Cleiton Silva, the team has only managed to create 80 chances, the fewest in the league. Strengthening this aspect is a priority for East Bengal.

While their defense ranks as the second-best in terms of goals conceded, the offense lags behind as the third-worst, scoring only 11 goals. The goal drought for forward Javier Siverio adds to the concerns, with only four players finding the back of the net. The absence of an Indian forward is a notable gap that the team aims to address.

In the midst of these challenges, Souvik Chakrabarti has emerged as a key player, redeeming himself and becoming integral to Carles Cuadrat’s system. With Souvik’s importance, the team recognizes the need for a suitable replacement in his absence, particularly to partner with Saul Crespo.

As of now, the arrivals and departures columns remain untouched, suggesting a stable squad composition. However, the focus for East Bengal is undoubtedly on finding a foreign striker who can ignite the goal-scoring spark the team desperately needs. Cuadrat’s tactical acumen will be put to the test as he navigates the complexities of the transfer market in search of a player who can seamlessly fit into the team’s dynamics.

Jamshedpur FC has been prolific in creating chances, ranking second with 107 opportunities, yet struggles with goal conversion, finding themselves in the 9th position for goals scored (12) this season. This poor conversion rate and a lack of composure in front of the goal have resulted in a 10th position on the points table, with only nine points from 12 matches.

Jamshedpur FC embarked on a journey of transformation in the summer, appointing Scott Cooper and making significant investments. However, the results failed to align with expectations, leaving the team languishing in the 10th spot on the ISL table. Two very reliable players for Des Buckingham, Ahmed Jahouh and Mourtada Fall, have both left the club this summer to join Odisha FC. Both have signed a contract until 2025, and will be reuniting with Sergio Lobera, who also coached them at Mumbai.

Fall has made 68 appearances in the Sky Blue shirt, scoring eight goals. But he has now decided to take up a new challenge with the Super Cup winners alongside Jahouh, who also moved on after the expiry of his contract.
