  • IPL 2022: MS Dhoni takes up captaincy of CSK after 8 disappointing games

IPL 2022: MS Dhoni takes up captaincy of CSK after 8 disappointing games

MS Dhoni has taken back the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings from Ravindra Jadeja. The all-rounder decided to relinquish his role in charge of the team after struggling to perform, and Dhoni obliged by taking charge of the franchise for the greater good.

The decision to make Jadeja captain of the team was announced only 24 hours before CSK’s first game of the season. This was out of fear that sponsors would pull out due to the brand value of having Dhoni as captain. And now, his brief spell in charge has been cut short following an official statement from the team.

MS Dhoni returns to CSK captaincy

“Look, nothing happens in CSK without MSD’s approval. He is the first, second, third, and last word when it comes to cricketing matters. Doesn’t matter who captains the side. If CSK would have announced Dhoni’s decision to step down two months before IPL, it would have affected the potential team sponsors’ morale.

“Once the sponsors were all locked in, it’s safer to make an announcement,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI.

CSK have stated that stepping down from captaining the club will allow Jadeja to focus more on his individual game. So far, he has taken five wickets and scored 112 runs. Dhoni was seen making key decisions in games despite Jadeja being named captain. This resulted in him looking uncomfortable at times.

Even if MS Dhoni’s return to captaincy can help the team win the rest of their games, it is unlikely that they will be making it to the playoffs this year.

IPL 2022: Dhoni to remain the captain of CSK for the 15th edition of IPL

MS Dhoni had earlier hinted that IPL 2022 could be his last season and the franchise isn’t really sure about his future. A lot of assumptions were doing around that MS will pass on the captaincy responsibility to Ravindra Jadeja but as per CSK officials, no transformation will take this season.

During the 2021 title celebration, he expressed his wish to play his last IPL match at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. However, that’s has a minimum chance to happen since due to the Covid-19 pandemic, BCCI is planning to conduct the IPL 2022 in Mumbai and Pune and thus Dhoni doesn’t desire to commit to anything this season.

MS Dhoni to stay the captain in IPL 2022

A source informed that “See, you are talking about Dhoni, who has set examples after examples. He left the top retention spot for Jadeja and has been one of the first to arrive for CSK camp every time. He is fit, led the team to another title. Why would he retire mid-season? All of those discussions will take place at the right time. Right now, his focus is on auction,”

MS Dhoni is in Chennai at present to plan for the IPL 2022 Auctions and will remain there for one night. He is going to be present in the auction that will take place in Bengaluru.

Earlier, when the franchises were picking their retained players, MS Dhoni asked the owners to pay the first slab salary to Ravindra Jadeja and thus he slipped to position number two, accepting a huge salary cut. CSK also retained Moeen Ali for Rs 8 Crore and Ruturaj Gaikwad for Rs 6 Crore. Later, the franchisee will be targeting their loyal players like Suresh Raina and Faf du Plessis. However, the franchise made no comment on this.

IPL 2022: Sunrisers Hyderabad explores IPO listing, CSK will become the first sports unicorn

IPL 2022 is going to be as big as ever. Two new teams will be entering the league at a huge premium. CSK won the 2021 edition, which increase its share price in the grey -market. After Sanjiv Goenka bought IPL’s Lucknow franchise with a 7,000-crore plus bid and CVC Capital bought Ahmedabad franchise for 5,635 crores, Chennai Super King’s share price further went up.

N Srinivasan, the Managing director of India Cements told “Brand CSK will outgrow Brand India Cements. If you look at the history of franchise-based leagues in the US, it will outgrow everything. Passion for cricket is so much in India. The road between countries will see franchise-based leagues getting the precedence as we go along.”

CSK is the only sports team in India whose shares are available for public investment, and the performance of this team has always been to-notch so it attracts interest.

Why has the Board selected MS Dhoni as the mentor of the Indian team for the T20 World Cup?

MS Dhoni is widely regarded as one of the best wicket keeper batsmen in the history of the sport. Moreover, his name also comes among the elite list of greatest captain of all time. As a result, roping him to mentor a Indian side filled with youngsters was a no brainer.

    Credit to Cricfit

The former Indian captain has played 90 tests, 350 ODI’s and 98 T20I’s for India during his career. Out of which he has helped India win the prestigious T20 World Cup in 2007, 50 over World Cup in 2011 and the ICC champions trophy in 2013. Therefore one can say that his inputs will be extremely valuable for the Indian side.

In addition to all the international achievements, MSD has been highly successful as a captain for Chennai Super Kings. The Chennai captain has led the side to three IPL titles and has helped the squad qualify 9 out of 10 times in the playoffs. Known for his calm decision making, Dhoni will release the pressure of new players like Chakravarthy, R. Chahar and many others.

Therefore it will be interesting to see how this Indian team fares under the guidance of MSD as a mentor in this T20 World Cup that will take place from 17th October-14th November in UAE and Oman.
