What Went Wrong for Erik Ten Hag at Manchester United?

We evaluate Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United following his departure from the club on October 28.

And just like that, the Erik ten Hag era has come to an end.

Erik ten Hag What Went Wrong for Erik Ten Hag at Manchester United?
    Erik ten Hag

His time at the club lasted 850 days and 128 games across all competitions, yet his turbulent and dramatic journey often felt far longer.

Throughout his tenure, Ten Hag navigated boardroom changes, delivered two trophies, and transformed from Manchester United’s hopeful savior to the manager overseeing their lowest-ever Premier League finish.

The breaking point was a 2-1 loss to West Ham United on Sunday—a game that could easily have ended in a comfortable win but instead epitomized the chaos that often marked his stint at Old Trafford.

Ironically, it wasn’t always like this.

Just over a year ago, Ten Hag was celebrated for returning United to the UEFA Champions League and for revitalizing the club culture. However, a difficult 2023/24 Premier League season—despite an impressive FA Cup victory over Manchester City—has since overshadowed those achievements.

The story grew more complex in the 2024/25 season. Manchester United began with a stronger defense but a much weaker attack, a complete reversal of their 2023/24 issues, yet leading to the same disappointing outcome.

Here’s a look at how it unraveled for Ten Hag.

2022/23: A Promising Start with Underlying Flaws

In his debut season, Erik ten Hag made bold moves: moving on from Cristiano Ronaldo, revitalizing Marcus Rashford, centering the midfield around Casemiro, winning the EFL Cup without conceding, and guiding Manchester United back to the Champions League. It seemed like the perfect start.

Yet, in retrospect, there were hints that United’s rebuild wasn’t as robust as it appeared.

The season began with back-to-back defeats, including a crushing 4-0 loss to Brentford, foreshadowing tactical inconsistencies. Ten Hag had suggested a style inspired by Ajax, though he admitted, “It is always players who dictate the way of play,” perhaps preempting the team’s shapeless performances. United’s play often relied on individual moments rather than cohesive tactics; there was no high pressing, little passing structure, and their mid-table metrics suggested an underlying vulnerability masked by a few standout performances.

Rashford’s 17-goal revival and strong additions like Lisandro Martinez helped United to a third-place finish, but it was Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, and Rashford’s key moments within a conservative, counter-attacking setup that made the season successful. Ten Hag’s adaptation to Casemiro’s leadership resembled Zinedine Zidane’s pragmatic approach at Real Madrid, with United averaging just 53.7% possession.

However, metrics told a different story. Opta’s Expected Points table placed United in sixth with an xP of 64.2, only slightly above the previous season’s 55.6. The 7-0 defeat to Liverpool overshadowed the EFL Cup victory, underscoring that Ten Hag’s successful debut may have relied on over-performance, foreshadowing the challenges ahead.

Erik ten Hags 2022 23 season was a strong transitional season but perhaps not as good as it looked What Went Wrong for Erik Ten Hag at Manchester United?

Still, Ten Hag had undeniably achieved his primary goals: securing Manchester United’s second-highest points tally (75) since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, a third-place finish, and a trophy.

So, after another summer, surely year two would bring the anticipated tactical transformation…right?

2023/24: Ten Hag’s Shift to ‘Direct’ Football Unravels

In May 2023, Ten Hag explained his evolving approach, saying, “I can’t play like Ajax because I have different players. I came here with my philosophy based on possession, but I wanted to combine it with the DNA of Manchester United, the players, and their characters… I want to emphasise more on going direct.”

Since August 2023, however, pundits have expressed confusion over Ten Hag’s tactics. Yet, to his credit, he had made his intentions clear after his first season: fast, direct football aligned with the “United Way.” Signings like Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund, known for their pressing ability, alongside goalkeeper Andre Onana for building play from the back, seemed to support this new direction.

But things didn’t go as planned. Casemiro’s performance declined, Rashford’s form dipped, and the midfield often disappeared, a byproduct of United’s defensive line sitting back as the forwards pressed. This gap left a vast, exploited space in midfield, leading to an ineffective and disjointed system.

    Manchester United’s press

Ten Hag struggled to address this gap, and week after week, opposing teams effortlessly exploited the open spaces.

By season’s end, Manchester United had faced 667 shots—the second-most in the league—along with 862 progressive carries and 366 successful take-ons against them, ranking third and fourth in those categories, respectively.

Shots conceded by Manchester United What Went Wrong for Erik Ten Hag at Manchester United?
    Shots conceded by Manchester United

To be fair to Ten Hag, his season was marred by an unprecedented injury crisis. Manchester United endured more injuries than any other Premier League team, with 45 setbacks—many impacting the defensive line, which partially explains their poor defensive record.

However, this doesn’t fully account for their struggles in the Premier League or the Champions League, where they finished at the bottom of their group, conceding 15 goals in six games.

In fact, looking at the Expected Points table, United may have been fortunate to finish as high as eighth. According to Opta, their Expected Points were just under 45.0, which would have placed them closer to 15th.

It seems almost unimaginable—as did Manchester United’s remarkable FA Cup campaign, where they scraped through thrilling encounters with Liverpool and Coventry City to reach the final. There, they clinched a 2-1 victory over Manchester City, securing a second trophy in as many years under Ten Hag.

Yet, even in this triumph, the signs of an impending end were evident. United’s defensive shape and mere 26 percent possession suggested not a rebirth, but rather a calculated smash-and-grab win.

2024/25: Tactical Adjustments and Persistent Misfortune

The FA Cup victory extended Ten Hag’s tenure and highlighted his record—only Pep Guardiola had lifted more trophies since Ten Hag’s arrival in 2022. This success secured the backing of new part-owners, INEOS, and justified another substantial investment in the squad, bringing his spending total to a reported £564 million—the most by any United manager since Ferguson. Expectations were high, and Ten Hag needed a strong start.

However, the season began disappointingly. United collected only 11 points from their first nine league matches, alongside three Europa League draws, marking over a year without a European victory. This slow start ultimately led to his dismissal, despite some promising signs.

With key players returning from injury, United adopted a higher defensive line and ramped up their aggression. Currently, they lead the Premier League in tackles won (120) and interceptions (102), showing glimpses of improvement amid continued bad luck, including a fresh injury to new signing Leny Yoro.

Tackles Won by Manchester United What Went Wrong for Erik Ten Hag at Manchester United?
    Tackles Won by Manchester United

Progress on the defensive side was countered by wasteful finishing, highlighted in what became Ten Hag’s final game in charge.

Diogo Dalot’s missed open goal seemed to encapsulate their season—a moment that Ten Hag likely viewed as yet another instance of unfortunate luck.

Indeed, Ten Hag faced considerable misfortune. We’ll never know if United might have thrived in 2023/24 without the barrage of injuries, if this season would have unfolded differently with Yoro, or even how the team’s path might have changed had they secured De Jong instead of Casemiro in 2022.

Yet, despite the “what ifs,” after over two years at the helm, Ten Hag ultimately bears responsibility for the team he assembled. In hindsight, there’s widespread agreement that throughout his tenure—including that initial promising season—Manchester United lacked a clear identity or playing style.

Ten Hag departs with an average of 1.72 points per match, the third-lowest in United’s Premier League history, just narrowly surpassing David Moyes’ 1.68.

In the end, the injuries, fleeting successes, and FA Cup moments fade beside one statistic, which perhaps tells the clearest story of the Erik ten Hag era.

  • Ruben Amorim’s Mission: 5 Priorities to Transform Manchester United

Ruben Amorim’s Mission: 5 Priorities to Transform Manchester United

Manchester United quickly secured their target. The challenge for Ruben Amorim is to respond with equal urgency as he works to rebuild the team from top to bottom.

What are Amorims top five priorities at Man Utd Ruben Amorim’s Mission: 5 Priorities to Transform Manchester United

Although this is a long-term project, Amorim may need to start off strong after two challenging years for Man Utd. Here, we outline five key priorities for Amorim following his appointment at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim’s Mission: 5 Priorities to Transform Manchester United

    1. Define a Strong Identity from the Start

This is the most crucial and non-negotiable point.

Under Erik ten Hag, Manchester United lacked a discernible tactical identity, so Ruben Amorim will win over supporters by establishing clear principles from the beginning.

There is no doubt he will achieve this.

Amorim consistently employs a back three and typically adopts a 3-4-3 formation, emphasizing a high press, proactive possession-based football, and complex passing networks originating from the back.

Last season, his Sporting Lisbon team was recognized as one of the most “slow and intricate” sides in the Primeira Liga, as highlighted by Opta Analyst, as illustrated in the graphic below.

Manchester United Playing Style Ruben Amorim’s Mission: 5 Priorities to Transform Manchester United

Regarding their pressing, Sporting’s PPDA (passes per defensive action), which gauges the effectiveness of their pressing, stands at 9.5 this season. This figure is lower than all Premier League teams except for Tottenham Hotspur (7.8) and Arsenal (9.2).

Manchester United must demonstrate some of these characteristics from the outset, as this is a team that requires structure, discipline, and tactical guidance more than anything else.

    2. Build on Ten Hag’s Improved Defense as a Foundation

Amorim should make defense the cornerstone of his approach because, surprisingly, it is arguably the strongest aspect of Manchester United’s current team.

This season, United’s Expected Goals Against (xGA) in the Premier League has only slightly decreased from 1.84 per 90 minutes to 1.70 compared to the 2023/24 season, but the overall performance suggests a different narrative.

Ten Hag advanced his defensive line, and the addition of Noussair Mazraoui contributed to a more aggressive defense capable of stepping up.

This approach was evident in relatively solid performances against Aston Villa (0.50), Brentford (0.86), and Fulham (0.44), where they conceded an xG of less than one in each match.

Fulhams Shot Map vs Manchester United Ruben Amorim’s Mission: 5 Priorities to Transform Manchester United
Fulham’s Shot Map vs Manchester United

Amorim can theoretically expand upon Ten Hag’s concepts with his own high defensive line.

He will be particularly pleased with Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez, though Harry Maguire is currently the only defender in the squad with substantial experience in a back three setup.

    3. Incorporate Ugarte into the Team

During Ten Hag’s first summer at Old Trafford, he aimed to sign Frenkie de Jong—a midfielder he had previously worked with—to spearhead a tactical overhaul from the midfield. Instead, he was provided with a vastly different player in Casemiro.

Amorim won’t have to search for a former favorite to lead the midfield, as Manchester United has already secured his services.

Manuel Ugarte served as the anchor in Amorim’s two-man midfield during the 2022/23 season, recording a combined total of 178 tackles and interceptions, the highest in the Primeira Liga.

Ugarte can replicate this impact at United, driving a high-intensity pressing game and addressing the significant gaps that often emerged in central midfield during the Ten Hag era.

    4. Center the Attack Around Hojlund

The acquisition of Rasmus Hojlund for a reported £72 million was a significant milestone in the Ten Hag project, although the young striker has yet to fully establish himself.

Fortunately, he possesses all the characteristics of an Amorim forward and has the potential to become the central figure in United’s attack.

Zirkzee vs Rasmus Plarer Comparison Ruben Amorim’s Mission: 5 Priorities to Transform Manchester United
    Zirkzee vs Rasmus Plarer Comparison

Hojlund’s pressing, direct style, and power in the penalty box were what stood out during his time at Atalanta. In this regard, the 21-year-old is reminiscent of Viktor Gyokeres, who scored 41 goals in 42 Primeira Liga matches under Amorim.

Amorim prefers his front three to consist of a strong striker supported by two direct inside forwards, emphasizing speed and verticality. This approach makes Hojlund a more suitable fit compared to Joshua Zirkzee.

    5. Address the Rashford and Fernandes Dilemmas

Amorim faces two potentially challenging issues ahead.

The first is Marcus Rashford’s form, which poses a puzzle for any United manager. The second concerns the specific challenges presented by Amorim’s preference for a 3-4-3 formation.

There isn’t a clear role for Bruno Fernandes, yet his contributions—creating 114 Premier League chances last season, significantly more than Alejandro Garnacho’s 46—suggest he must have a place in the team.

However, Fernandes lacks the targeted pressing, speed, and positional discipline typical of an Amorim inside forward, making it difficult to envision him transitioning into a No. 6 role alongside Ugarte.

Rashford’s 2022-23 Season in terms of Goals Scored in the Premier League

This presents a challenge with no straightforward solution. Conversely, Rashford’s form might be an easier issue to resolve.

Having scored 17 Premier League goals in 2022/23 while playing off the left wing, he naturally fits the inside forward position. Amorim’s high defensive line, aggressive pressing, and vertical possession style should, in theory, provide Rashford with the ideal conditions to regain his best form.

How will Manchester United set up under Ruben Amorim. Back Three and a Midfield Pivot or Stick to the Same Formation How will Manchester United Set up Under Ruben Amorim?

Under Amorim’s leadership, Man Utd is poised to undergo a noticeable transformation. Previously, the team lacked a distinct identity and struggled to establish a consistent style of play under Erik ten Hag.

Now, Amorim is set to lead a strategic overhaul.

Tactical Shift: A Back Three Formation Incoming of 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1

Amorim, 39, is likely to introduce a back-three system at United, moving from a 4-2-3-1 to a 3-4-2-1 formation. His setup relies on a well-coordinated press supported by a high defensive line to limit opponents’ space.

Throughout his tenure at Sporting Lisbon, Amorim consistently used a three-man defense, showcasing his commitment to this approach. Since the 2022/23 season, his preferred formation has been a 3-4-3, centered around a dynamic forward line capable of fluid interchanges.

Amorims formations used in Primeira Liga How will Manchester United Set up Under Ruben Amorim?

Replicating Amorim’s previous setup is a real possibility—one that could especially benefit Marcus Rashford—but it raises questions about Bruno Fernandes’ role.

In such a system, United’s playmaker might shift into central midfield, similar to how Pedro Goncalves has occasionally played for Sporting. However, Amorim is more likely to start at Old Trafford with a 3-4-2-1. In this formation, Fernandes could occupy one of the advanced midfield positions, moving inside to allow the right wing-back to provide width.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Amad Diallo is reimagined as a right wing-back, especially with Fernandes positioned inside of him. Amorim recently demonstrated his adaptability by converting 17-year-old winger Geovany Quenda into a wing-back earlier this season.

Three players who could greatly benefit from Ruben Amorim’s arrival are Lisandro Martinez, Manuel Ugarte, and Alejandro Garnacho.

Argentine defender Martinez, a natural left-footer, is ideally suited to the left side of a back three—a formation Erik ten Hag was reluctant to use at United. Amorim’s build-up strategy emphasizes ball-playing central defenders who can drive passes into midfield, a skill Martinez excels at.

Martinez leads the team with 467 successful passes this season and tops United’s charts in progressive ball carries, making him a prime fit for Amorim’s approach.

Man Utds top ball carriespasses 2024 25 How will Manchester United Set up Under Ruben Amorim?

Amorim will rely on Lisandro Martinez to initiate attacks from deep, progressing the ball forward with precision.

Meanwhile, Uruguay midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who is still adjusting to the Premier League’s intensity, is likely to develop quickly under Amorim—a coach who previously unlocked his potential in Lisbon. Ugarte’s defensive role in Amorim’s pivot will be vital, as will his familiarity with the coach’s off-the-ball demands. This setup will require Ugarte to take on increased responsibility on matchdays.

Before his transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in 2022/23, Ugarte’s 121 tackles ranked second in the Primeira Liga, and he frequently recovered possession in the final third (23 times) to support Amorim’s pressing style. His passing accuracy, an impressive 91.6%, was also the best in the league, making him a natural fit for Amorim’s system.

At just 20 years old, Garnacho is another player poised to excel under a coach known for his faith in young talent.

While he lacked a guaranteed spot under Ten Hag, Garnacho’s agile movement and technical skills should position him as a key component of United’s front three in a 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-3 formation.

With Amorim’s strong track record of developing young players, Garnacho is likely looking forward to collaborating with him.

    Concerns for Wing-Backs Under Amorim

Amorim intends for his wing-backs to offer width in advanced areas, making them a crucial part of his attacking strategy.

While Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, and Luke Shaw can perform these roles, they are primarily natural full-backs rather than traditional wing-backs. This season, Dalot and Mazraoui have created a total of 12 chances—nine from Dalot and three from Mazraoui—along with one assist each.

In contrast, Sporting’s wing-backs achieved three goals and two assists in just nine league matches. Looking ahead, Amorim may seek to recruit more dynamic and adventurous players for those wide positions.

    Strengthening Manchester United’s Defensive Resilience

Amorim’s Sporting has shown impressive defensive capabilities, conceding only twice in nine league matches in the 2024/25 season and just once in three UEFA Champions League games.

Known for his analytical and pragmatic approach, Amorim organizes his teams to be tough to break down. His 3-4-2-1 formation transitions to a 5-2-3 when out of possession, making it challenging for opponents to generate scoring opportunities. In their three Champions League matches, Sporting faced only 32 shots, fewer than both high-flying Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Taking over a Manchester United team that allowed three goals at home to both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, Amorim will prioritize improving this aspect of their game. Since the beginning of the 2023/24 season, his Sporting side has boasted a better PPDA (passes per defensive action) in European competitions than United, highlighting their effectiveness in disrupting opponents’ play. Additionally, Amorim’s teams have demonstrated greater patience in possession, employing a distinctive style characterized by neat, short-passing football.

We witnessed the effectiveness of Amorim’s tactics during the two-legged UEFA Europa League clash against Arsenal in March 2023, where his Sporting side eliminated the Gunners on penalties.

Throughout that matchup, Amorim’s strategic adjustments consistently drew Arsenal out of position, disrupting their rhythm. In the first leg, Sporting intentionally stretched the game to exploit Jorginho’s limited mobility. In the return leg at the Emirates Stadium, his team focused on maintaining possession for extended periods, which frustrated Arsenal.

Overall, Sporting generated 3.47 Expected Goals (xG) in a tie that concluded with a 3-3 aggregate score.

Can Amorim Unlock the Full Potential of Manchester United’s Players?

It’s clear why Manchester United has chosen Amorim, who is recognized as an exceptional communicator, effective man-manager, and skilled tactician.

While the shape of his team typically remains consistent, he is a keen student of the game, always ready to adapt his strategy based on the opponent. Amorim’s teams are known for being both positive and proactive, making them difficult to play against.

His coaching has significantly developed former Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres over the past 14 months, which bodes well for Rasmus Hojlund, a player with similar attributes, as he looks forward to this transition.

The challenge that lies ahead for Amorim is substantial, but his successful track record of revitalizing Sporting demonstrates that he is equipped to lead Manchester United back to prominence.

Change is once again sweeping through Manchester United. After Erik ten Hag’s departure on Monday, the club swiftly moved to secure their top choice as his replacement: Sporting CP head coach Rúben Amorim.

At 39, Amorim becomes the youngest full-time United manager since Wilf McGuinness, who was appointed at 31 in 1969. He will officially take charge during the upcoming international break, just in time for United’s match against Ipswich Town on November 24.

A managerial shift always sparks intrigue, but Amorim’s arrival is particularly compelling due to his distinct tactical style, marking a significant departure from recent United managers. Known for his preference for a back three and a formation without traditional wingers, Amorim’s setup—if carried over from his time at Sporting—would bring a fresh approach to Old Trafford.

Although it’s uncertain whether he will stick to this system, it’s natural to wonder what changes might unfold at United if he does initiate a tactical overhaul. Such a shift could have contrasting impacts on different players, suiting some while presenting challenges for others.

    The Centre-Backs

Since taking charge in March 2020, Amorim’s Sporting has predominantly utilized a back three. The formation he typically prefers resembles a 3-4-3, but his approach is not strictly defined.

When out of possession, the formation can often shift to variations such as 5-1-2-2, 5-2-2-1, or 5-2-3.

When in possession, it can be understood in various ways, influenced by the players on the field, the opposing team, and the state of the game.

A backline featuring three established centre-backs is standard, regardless of whether one occasionally moves into midfield.

Given that United has an abundance of central defenders this season—many of whom are accustomed to having significant ball involvement—this aspect of Amorim’s system may be an area where they can adapt effectively.

In Amorim’s Sporting, the centre-backs play a crucial role in distribution and advancing play by moving forward. Among defenders who have played at least 1,000 minutes in Portugal’s top league since the start of the 2023-24 season, Sporting’s Matheus Reis (12.6) and Gonçalo Inácio (13.9) lead in progressive carries per 90 minutes. Additionally, both of them, along with teammate Ousmane Diomande, are ranked in the top six for total carry distance per 90 minutes. Inácio (99.3) also boasts the highest average touches of any player in the division during the same timeframe.

Since the beginning of last season, Amorim’s Sporting has placed a significantly greater emphasis on building play through the centre of their defensive third compared to United, as illustrated in the two graphics below, highlighting the critical role of the centre-backs in possession.

On paper, a back three featuring Lisandro Martínez, Matthijs de Ligt, and Leny Yoro appears to be a seamless combination. Nevertheless, it’s important to acknowledge that Harry Maguire has shown his ability to effectively carry the ball out of defense at times in his career. The added protection offered by Amorim’s system might address some of the concerns regarding his or De Ligt’s mobility.

    Rasmus Højlund

Since the beginning of last season, United has faced a multitude of challenges, yet it’s difficult not to believe that their situation might have improved if they had been more proficient in front of goal.

If only that had crossed their minds, right?!

Of course, we understand that football isn’t that simple, but it’s still important to highlight the clear issues, especially given the concerning underlying statistics.

Since last season started, United has scored 59 non-penalty goals in the Premier League from a total of 66.2 expected non-penalty goals (xG), resulting in an underperformance of 7.2, which is the second worst in the league, trailing only Everton (14.1). This is troubling enough, but the situation is further compounded by the fact that their 66.2 non-penalty xG ranks only above six clubs when excluding those promoted or relegated last season.

manchester united xg 1536x1152 1 Which Manchester United Players Could Benefit from Ruben Amorim's Appointment and Who Could Find it Tough

In essence, United has struggled to generate high-quality scoring chances, but they do have Rasmus Højlund, a striker who has demonstrated significant potential. Few centre-forwards possess the skill set and physical attributes necessary to be effective in transition, behind defenders, and with their back to goal, but Højlund fits that description.

Moreover, he has displayed encouraging signs in front of goal, supported by the data. Although his tally of 11 goals is modest, he boasts a conversion rate of 26.2%, surpassed by only four players (with a minimum of 15 shots) since the start of last season. Additionally, 57.1% of his attempts have been on target, a percentage only bettered by three other strikers.

Part of the problem lies in the service he receives. With 42 shots taken since the start of the 2023-24 season, he averages just 1.6 shots per 90 minutes. While he can’t escape some criticism, United’s poor xG record indicates a broader issue with creativity.

Viktor Gyökeres has excelled as the central striker under Amorim at Sporting, with both him (3.8) and Paulinho (4.1) – prior to Paulinho’s move to Mexican club Toluca – posting impressive shots-per-90 rates, indicating a higher level of service.

While the Primeira Liga isn’t on par with the Premier League, and we don’t yet know how Amorim’s United will perform, the players from the two clubs aren’t directly interchangeable. Nevertheless, Amorim’s success with Gyökeres serves as a positive indicator, and there is ample reason to anticipate that Højlund will receive more support.

    Harry Amass

While United’s abundance of centre-backs positions them well to adopt a three-at-the-back formation, this advantage may be countered by a shortage of players capable of operating as wing-backs, a crucial aspect of Amorim’s Sporting setup.

sporting cp wing backs in premeira liga 1536x1152 1 Which Manchester United Players Could Benefit from Ruben Amorim's Appointment and Who Could Find it Tough

Even if we momentarily assume that full-backs and wing-backs serve similar roles, there remains a significant lack of suitable players. Luke Shaw has been sidelined for over eight months; Tyrell Malacia last appeared on the field in May 2023; Alvaro Fernández was unexpectedly sold to Benfica at a low price; and either Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui is often played out of position on the left.

For the time being, Mazraoui and Dalot may suffice, but a more suitable option exists within the youth ranks.

Harry Amass made a noticeable impact during pre-season and performed well, but it seems Ten Hag and United determined he wasn’t quite ready to transition to the first team.

Defensively, he still has much to learn—something expected at just 17—but his technical skills and attacking dynamism are undeniable. Should Amorim choose to employ wing-backs, which appears likely given his past preferences, left-footed Amass could provide the natural width that Dalot or Mazraoui may struggle to deliver.

sporting cp wing backs 1536x1182 1 Which Manchester United Players Could Benefit from Ruben Amorim's Appointment and Who Could Find it Tough

There is also a case to be made that Amass would serve as a superior attacking option due to his speed, agility, and ball control.

Amorim demonstrated a willingness to promote young talent by elevating Nuno Mendes to a starting role at the same age in the same position at Sporting, making him the first-choice left-back at just 18 after Marcos Acuña’s departure. Could Amass become another example of Amorim’s commitment to nurturing youth?

    Manuel Ugarte

This one is quite evident. Ugarte gained recognition under Amorim at Sporting, initially joining as a backup to João Palhinha in 2021 before competing for his position and ultimately taking over for the Portugal international a year later when Palhinha transferred to Fulham.

At Sporting, Ugarte became well-known for his dynamic playing style, taking on one of the double-pivot roles in Amorim’s midfield.

While he is a capable player in many respects, it was his tenacity and off-ball presence that many considered to be his primary strengths. However, this didn’t align with Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique’s vision, as he sought a defensive midfielder with more of a deep-lying playmaking role—leading to the summer acquisition of João Neves, which allowed Ugarte to leave.

Ugarte seemed like a logical signing, expected to bring the steel and off-ball movement that United’s midfield has lacked, yet he hardly featured under Ten Hag. Prior to Wednesday’s 5-2 EFL Cup victory over Leicester, he had only logged 347 minutes across all competitions, which was less than half of the 761 and 779 minutes recorded by Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, both of whom the club reportedly wanted to offload in the summer.

With Amorim’s arrival, it’s likely that Ugarte—who performed excellently against Leicester—will see more playing time. Given his familiarity with the coach’s systems, he could prove to be quite significant if United transitions to a new style of play.

manuel ugarte positions at sporting cp 1536x1536 1 Which Manchester United Players Could Benefit from Ruben Amorim's Appointment and Who Could Find it Tough

    Bruno Fernandes

It seems highly unlikely that United’s captain will find himself benched or transferred out following Amorim’s arrival. After all, Bruno Fernandes is not only the skipper but is widely considered the team’s best player.

That said, it is worth noting that his current role as a No. 10 does not quite fit into Amorim’s system. While we cannot say for certain what formation he will opt for, a traditional No. 10 is not something he has consistently utilized in the past.

There is a version of Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation that includes a support striker at the top of a midfield diamond, which could be a way to position Fernandes in a central role, although this is not typical of Amorim’s usual setup.

Therefore, it is quite possible that Fernandes will need to adjust to a slightly different position than he is accustomed to. If Amorim structures United similarly to his Sporting team, the most likely scenarios would see Fernandes either play as one of the two midfielders in a double pivot or as one of the forwards supporting the central striker.

The latter wouldn’t be entirely unfamiliar to him; for example, Ten Hag occasionally deployed Fernandes on the right to strengthen the midfield. Likewise, the wide forwards in Amorim’s Sporting side often moved inside, effectively acting as a partner to the striker (as illustrated in the shape analysis graphics above).

Ultimately, the key point is that Fernandes may not enjoy the same level of freedom under Amorim. While some may welcome this change, it could hinder his creative contributions.

    The Wingers

As mentioned earlier, the wing-backs primarily provide width in Amorim’s system. However, this doesn’t mean that the wide forwards don’t venture out to the flanks; in fact, one of the key strengths of Amorim’s Sporting team has been their ability to recognize when to move the ball wide. Since the beginning of last season, no club in the Primeira Liga has generated more chances from either wing.

That said, these wide attackers typically operate in a more narrow position than what United’s current players may be accustomed to. For instance, let’s take a look at the ball-carrying patterns of Marcus Edwards and Pote below…

edwards long progressive carries 1536x1152 1 Which Manchester United Players Could Benefit from Ruben Amorim's Appointment and Who Could Find it Tough
pote long progressive carries 1536x1152 1 Which Manchester United Players Could Benefit from Ruben Amorim's Appointment and Who Could Find it Tough

… to Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho in this context…

rashford long progressive carries 1536x1152 1 Which Manchester United Players Could Benefit from Ruben Amorim's Appointment and Who Could Find it Tough

They are quite distinct from each other.

Naturally, they are different players overall, and one could argue that Amorim has not previously coached forwards with the same skill set or talent level as Rashford or Garnacho.

With this in mind, he may adjust his approach to maximize their strengths, or he might stick with his existing strategy, and they could still excel—it’s hard to predict.

These adjusted roles would typically see them positioned closer to the central striker, allowing for better support and positioning nearer to the goal, which could be appealing.

However, similar to Fernandes, it’s likely that their roles will differ significantly from how they operated under Ten Hag. If they are reluctant to adapt in this new scenario, it could lead to complications.

    Antony

If the manager who signed you and had coached you for a couple of years hardly plays you, what chance do you have with the new one?

Antony’s time at Manchester United has been a significant letdown. Acquired in a deal worth an initial £82 million, he has only scored 12 goals and provided five assists across all competitions. This tally is just three more than Anthony Martial, who has played 3,150 fewer minutes since Antony’s debut and left the club this summer.

Recent media reports suggest that United have already put him on the market, seemingly abandoning any hope that he can reach the expectations that accompanied his transfer from Ajax.

While Antony fits into the previous “wingers” category, making it challenging for him to secure a starting spot under Amorim, the fact that he logged only 155 minutes in all competitions this season under Ten Hag—the manager who once viewed him as an £82 million player—makes it hard to see a way forward for him.

    Casemiro

In fairness to Casemiro, he has had a strong start to the season. His impact off the bench has been noticeable on several occasions, and he has appeared less vulnerable in recent matches compared to last season. His passing skills continue to be an asset for United, particularly during transitions.

man utd sequence involvements 1536x1152 1 Which Manchester United Players Could Benefit from Ruben Amorim's Appointment and Who Could Find it Tough

He was particularly impressive against Leicester on Wednesday, netting two goals (he should have scored a hat-trick) and effectively controlling the midfield.

Overall, he appears significantly sharper than he did during the 2023-24 season, leading some to believe he has earned his spot over Ugarte.

However, if Ugarte was signed as a long-term replacement for Casemiro and has prior experience playing under the new manager in the system he may implement, it seems quite likely that the Brazilian’s playing time could diminish.

While it may not happen in the immediate future due to Kobbie Mainoo’s injury, it would make sense for Amorim to prioritize a central midfield pairing of Mainoo and Ugarte once he returns, especially if he is planning for the long term. Additionally, Fernandes could also be vying for one of these positions.

The urgency to remove Fernandes from the lineup has not been as pressing in the 2024-25 season, and Wednesday’s victory demonstrated that pairing Casemiro with Ugarte as a double pivot is a viable option.

However, if Ugarte gets consistent playing time and adapts quickly to a system he is familiar with alongside Mainoo, Casemiro might find himself sidelined.

United is banking on his energy, innovation, and reputation for revitalizing clubs to lead the squad following the departure of Erik ten Hag last month. Amorim’s first official game as United’s manager will be against Ipswich Town on November 24, marking the start of a new era under his leadership.

From Sporting CP to Manchester United: Ruben Amorim’s Journey

Ruben Amorim’s managerial journey has been marked by rapid ascension and notable achievements. Once a professional midfielder, Amorim transitioned into coaching in 2019, where he immediately captured attention with his high-energy style and sharp tactical mind. Within a year, he moved from Braga to Sporting CP, transforming the club’s playing style and success trajectory. His tenure at Sporting was marked by two Primeira Liga titles and three Taca da Liga victories, with Sporting recognizing his potential early by paying a hefty release clause to secure him. These accomplishments at such a young age have made him one of Europe’s most intriguing and sought-after managers, now set to take on one of the biggest challenges in football at Old Trafford.

    The Appointment and Contract Details

Manchester United finalized the deal to bring Amorim in after paying Sporting an extra €1 million on top of his €10 million exit clause, enabling an early release from his current obligations. Amorim’s contract with United runs until June 2027, with a potential extension into 2028, giving him time to implement his strategic approach and work towards long-term success. Ruud van Nistelrooy, who stepped in after ten Hag’s departure, will continue to guide the squad until Amorim’s arrival and may yet have a role within Amorim’s coaching team, though this remains under consideration.

Why Manchester United Chose Ruben Amorim

United’s decision to appoint Ruben Amorim reflects a shift toward a younger, innovative leadership style. Known for his tactical adaptability and an intense commitment to discipline, Amorim has proven adept at building cohesive, high-performing teams.

His coaching success at Sporting, a club that had been in the shadows of its Portuguese rivals, mirrors United’s own desire to return to their competitive peak in the Premier League. His teams are marked by a dynamic style, emphasizing possession and organized defense, qualities United is eager to incorporate to stabilize their performance.

Amorim’s First Test: Ipswich Town on November 24

Amorim’s Manchester United debut will be a live broadcast against Ipswich Town, where fans and critics alike will observe his tactical approach in action. This match provides an early look at how Amorim may utilize United’s roster, adapting his game plans to fit the Premier League’s intense pace and strategic complexity. Expectations are high, given his reputation for injecting structure and confidence into his teams, qualities United has been seeking since ten Hag’s exit.

    The Future Under Amorim’s Leadership

United fans are hopeful that Amorim’s appointment marks the beginning of a fresh era. With a reputation for molding players to fit his strategic vision, Amorim’s track record suggests he could bring stability and consistency to United, something that has eluded the club in recent years. His commitment to player development and team cohesion will be crucial in a squad that has struggled to find balance. United’s management, too, appears committed to giving Amorim the time and resources he needs to execute his vision, reflecting a long-term investment in his potential to restore the club’s former glory.

Amorim’s Winning Formula: What Sets Him Apart

Ruben Amorim is renowned for his ability to inspire, his tactical awareness, and his adaptability. His coaching journey has been characterized by consistent success, whether it’s managing youth players or handling high-stakes matches against top European clubs. His approach combines a disciplined defense with an efficient offense, values that resonate with Manchester United’s ambition to develop a more versatile playing style. Additionally, his experience working with Portuguese coaches and honing his skills in a competitive environment has prepared him for the high expectations of Premier League football.

    Anticipation and High Expectations

The decision to bring in Amorim has been met with optimism among fans eager to see United’s resurgence under fresh guidance. While he faces immediate challenges in adjusting to the unique pressures of English football, his resume suggests he has the tactical intelligence and charisma to lead a club of United’s stature. With a squad eager to prove themselves and a coach driven by an ambitious vision, Amorim’s arrival has injected a new wave of anticipation for what lies ahead.

Ruben Amorim’s appointment comes with both high expectations and immediate tests of his managerial prowess. When he steps into Carrington on November 11, he’ll look to capitalize on any momentum the team has built from their Premier League clash with Leicester just a day earlier. Starting on the right foot is paramount; memories of Erik ten Hag’s rough start, which included an opening defeat to Brighton and a 4-0 loss at Brentford, serve as a cautionary tale Amorim will hope to avoid.

Amorim’s first set of games will provide early opportunities to solidify his approach, beginning with Ipswich away on November 24, followed by home matches against Bodo/Glimt and Everton. These initial fixtures allow the Portuguese coach to instill confidence and tactical discipline, but the real challenges lie just around the corner. A December 4 encounter with Arsenal at the Emirates will serve as an early indicator of the team’s progress, while the Manchester derby against City at the Etihad looms shortly after.

Adding to the intensity is a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham—a chance for Amorim, a proven cup winner in Portugal, to quickly make his mark. These early games are pivotal in setting the tone for United’s season, as a fast start could propel the squad toward a promising trajectory. For Amorim, the stakes are clear: his ability to deliver positive performances in these critical moments could define both his tenure and United’s future under his leadership.

Rúben Amorim appears to be on the cusp of taking the reins as Manchester United’s next manager. Here, we delve into why he’s one of Europe’s most sought-after coaches.

why man utd want ruben amorim 1 Ruben Amorim to Manchester United: Tactical Analysis - Why United Wants The Portuguese as Their Next Boss

When Manchester United spent part of the summer courting Thomas Tuchel, albeit quite openly, it was clear that Erik ten Hag would need a substantial turnaround to secure his position in the long term.

Though he managed to keep his job through pre-season, United’s leadership ultimately relieved the Dutchman of his duties on Monday, roughly two and a half years after luring him from Ajax. Some might argue he was fortunate to last as long as he did, but with that chapter closed, the club is wasting no time in moving forward.

While the decision on Ten Hag may have dragged on for months, United’s approach to finding a replacement appears far more swift and determined. Whether this signals real intent is yet to be seen, but United has already set its sights on Sporting CP’s head coach Rúben Amorim.

At 39, Amorim has been on the radar of several major clubs from top leagues in recent years. In 2024 alone, he was reportedly a candidate for managerial roles at Barcelona, Liverpool, and Chelsea, and he also engaged in talks with West Ham—a move he later called “a mistake”—before they hired Julen Lopetegui. Amorim has also been highly regarded as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, especially since City recently struck a deal to bring Sporting’s director of football, Hugo Viana, on board next year.

Yet it seems United may be the club to finally secure Amorim, with speculation suggesting he could be in place for the Premier League clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

So, what makes him the ideal choice?

Rúben Amorim’s Meteoric Start in Management

Amorim began his managerial career at the senior level as recently as December 2019. With Sporting Braga parting ways with Ricardo Sá Pinto, they promoted Amorim, then 34 and leading Braga’s B team, and the impact was immediate.

In his debut, Amorim’s team won 7-1 against Belenenses, setting the tone for Braga’s transformation. Braga quickly established itself as a force capable of challenging anyone in Portuguese football. From mid-January to mid-February, Braga faced Porto and Sporting twice each, and Benfica once—an intense lineup of the country’s toughest fixtures. Remarkably, Braga won all five games, including the Taça da Liga final against Porto, giving Amorim his first silverware just over a month into his senior management journey.

This rapid success drew widespread attention, and by early March 2020, Sporting Lisbon made a decisive move, paying a staggering €10 million release clause—then the third-highest fee ever for a manager. While the decision raised eyebrows, particularly as Sporting had gone through three managers that season, the gamble on Amorim proved inspired.

To fully grasp the transformation Amorim achieved, it’s essential to consider Sporting’s position at the time of his hiring. Investing heavily in such an inexperienced coach was undeniably risky, but after years of underperformance, it’s clear why Sporting felt compelled to make a bold move.

sporting celebrate 2020 21 primeira liga title Ruben Amorim to Manchester United: Tactical Analysis - Why United Wants The Portuguese as Their Next Boss

When Amorim arrived at Estádio José Alvalade in March 2020, Sporting was nearing an 18-year drought without a Primeira Liga title. They had only twice secured second place since 2009 and would close that season outside the top three for just the fourth time this century.

Yet, by the end of his first full season (2020-21), Amorim had led Sporting to their long-awaited Primeira Liga victory, nearly completing an unbeaten campaign. Their only loss came against fierce rivals Benfica in a thrilling seven-goal match on the season’s penultimate day—but the title was already secured.

Although Sporting couldn’t defend the title the following season, finishing second behind a Porto team that dropped points only five times, they fell further in 2022-23, missing the top three entirely, sparking questions about Amorim’s future.

In 2023-24, however, Amorim led Sporting back to the top, clinching the title with a comfortable 10-point lead over Benfica. The club has started the 2024-25 season strong, winning all nine of their league matches so far.

For perspective, from the start of the 2015-16 season until Amorim’s arrival, Sporting’s Primeira Liga points total of 347 lagged behind Benfica and Porto’s 396 and 381, respectively. Since Amorim’s hiring, Sporting has amassed 382 points—seven more than Porto and 27 more than Benfica.

primeira liga points since ruben amorim joined sporting Ruben Amorim to Manchester United: Tactical Analysis - Why United Wants The Portuguese as Their Next Boss

Naturally, Amorim hasn’t achieved this success single-handedly. Director of football Hugo Viana has earned praise for his contributions, though he assumed his role over two years before Amorim and had appointed several managers who ultimately didn’t succeed.

For most observers, however, it’s Amorim’s coaching skill, winning mentality, and charismatic leadership that have been the driving forces behind Sporting’s resurgence in Portuguese football. To say he will leave the club in a better position than he found it would be a considerable understatement.

Amorim’s Tactical Approach: How Will He Shape Manchester United’s Play?

Many United fans are likely wondering how Amorim would set up his team tactically. The answer depends largely on his approach upon arrival. Will he overhaul United’s current system entirely, or adapt his style based on the squad at hand? That remains to be seen, but we can analyze his previous tactics to get an idea of what he might bring to Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim 3 Ruben Amorim to Manchester United: Tactical Analysis - Why United Wants The Portuguese as Their Next Boss

One defining feature of Amorim’s style is his preference for a back-three formation, a setup that United have rarely employed, especially under Ten Hag. Amorim typically deploys a 3-4-3 formation, often resembling a 3-4-2-1, where wing-backs provide width, while two attacking midfielders tuck in behind a lone striker. The midfield usually consists of two players, with one sitting deeper to stabilize the defense.

Another variation Amorim has used involves a midfield diamond, where the middle center-back plays a defensive midfield role, and a support striker operates at the top of the diamond. This allows for wingers to stretch the field while supporting the main striker, offering flexibility and offensive depth.

Though pragmatic, Amorim’s tactics aren’t necessarily defensive. His Sporting team often sets up in a low block against equally matched or stronger opponents, focusing on organized transitions and efficient passing. For example, in Primeira Liga matches against Porto, Benfica, and Braga, Sporting’s passing sequences start, on average, 41.3 meters from their own goal, compared to 45.9 meters against other teams.

Nevertheless, Amorim’s Sporting has maintained a proactive stance, allowing opponents an average of 10.9 passes before engaging in defensive action (PPDA) since the start of 2023-24, a more aggressive stat than United’s 12.6 PPDA over the same period. Additionally, Sporting has averaged 9.3 high turnovers per game, slightly outperforming United’s 8.8, highlighting Amorim’s inclination for an active, high-press system.

Amorim places a clear emphasis on maintaining possession when his team is on the ball. Since the beginning of last season, they’ve registered 173 build-up attacks—open-play sequences involving at least 10 passes that lead to a shot or a touch in the opposition’s box—in the Primeira Liga, which is 30 more than any other team.

Yet, Amorim wouldn’t be considered a possession purist who insists on holding the ball purely for control. He values a team that can also be dangerous on the break. Since the start of 2023-24, they’ve made 100 direct attacks—open-play sequences beginning in their own half, with at least 50% forward movement toward the opposition goal, ending in a shot or a touch in the box—18 more than any other team in the Primeira Liga.

This aspect of their game saw a significant boost last season, especially with Viktor Gyokeres’ arrival, adding a new layer of attacking dynamism.

Regardless of their attacking approach, Sporting emphasizes build-up play through the center. With an absolute width—representing the maximum distance from the pitch center per sequence—of 24.9 meters since last season, they are among the narrower teams in the Primeira Liga.

The center-backs are instrumental here, contributing both in distribution and advancing play by stepping forward. Among defenders with over 1,000 minutes in Portugal’s top flight since the beginning of 2023-24, Sporting’s Matheus Reis (12.6) and Gonçalo Inácio (13.9) lead in progressive carries per 90 minutes. Reis, Inácio, and teammate Ousmane Diomande all rank in the top six for total carry distance per 90. Inácio also averages more touches (99.3) per game than any other player in the league.

While their play is often central, Amorim’s Sporting skillfully utilizes wide areas when needed; they lead the league in chances created from both the right (219) and left (185) attacking thirds since last season’s start.

Critics may highlight that Ten Hag, too, arrived at United with an impressive record from a dominant club in a smaller league. Known as a skilled tactician with a clear playing philosophy, he struggled to instill a lasting identity at Old Trafford or bring consistent cohesion to the squad.

Managing United and adapting to the Premier League will be a vastly different challenge than coaching Sporting. However, Amorim brings a strong track record of developing young talent, improving players, and winning titles. His charisma, distinctive methods, and assertive personality make him an intriguing candidate.

On the surface, there’s ample reason for optimism, though similar sentiments surrounded Ten Hag’s appointment. United’s longstanding issues, however, run deeper than coaching alone; a structural transformation is needed for the club to operate seamlessly, a journey that will likely span years.

Assuming he takes the role, Amorim will enter a challenging landscape. Yet someone will eventually succeed where no coach since Sir Alex Ferguson has, bringing United back to the pinnacle of English football. Amorim’s progress to this point suggests he’s earned a chance to be that figure.

Ruben Amorim Gives Green Light to Manchester United, Exit Clause Around €10m

In a thrilling turn of events, Manchester United has reportedly received an initial green light from Ruben Amorim, the innovative manager of Sporting Lisbon, who has expressed interest in joining the English club. This decision comes on the heels of Erik ten Hag’s departure, marking another potential shift in the club’s management strategy.

Amorim’s reported approval to discuss terms signifies that Manchester United may be closer to a managerial solution that aligns with their ambition to reclaim Premier League dominance. With a release clause around €10 million, Manchester United seems prepared to make a compelling offer. Here’s a closer look at what Amorim could bring to the Red Devils, his managerial style, and the challenges that lie ahead.

A Strategic Fit for Manchester United?

Ruben Amorim is considered one of Europe’s most tactical minds. At just 39, he has already led Sporting Lisbon to two Portuguese league titles, breaking a 19-year title drought in 2022. His quick ascent in European football makes him an appealing candidate for Manchester United, a club seeking both immediate results and long-term stability. Amorim’s preference for a 3-4-3 system not only allows tactical versatility but also prioritizes youth development, an area where Manchester United has historically excelled but lacked continuity in recent years.

Amorim’s management style aligns with United’s vision of developing young players into stars while maintaining a competitive squad. During his time with Sporting, he demonstrated his ability to cultivate talent, transforming young prospects into core players—a crucial factor as United looks to nurture emerging talents alongside its experienced stars.

The INEOS Influence and United’s Managerial Shift

INEOS, Manchester United’s ownership group, faced scrutiny for their support of Erik ten Hag despite inconsistent results. The sudden managerial shift is a bold step, but it suggests INEOS is committed to reviving the club’s legacy. Within hours of Ten Hag’s departure, reports linked Amorim to the managerial position. This swift response demonstrates United’s proactive approach to securing a manager whose style and philosophy align with the club’s needs.

INEOS’s decision to pursue Amorim suggests confidence in his ability to instill discipline, develop tactical depth, and reinvigorate a team that has struggled for stability since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure. With Ten Hag’s tenure now history, Amorim stands as the favored candidate capable of modernizing the squad and reconnecting it with Manchester United’s historic strengths.

Amorim’s Tactical Approach: What to Expect

Known for his tactical acumen, Amorim has relied on a versatile 3-4-3 system that emphasizes ball retention, positional play, and defensive discipline. His methodology focuses on optimizing player strengths and adapting strategies based on opponents, mirroring the approach of his role model, José Mourinho. Amorim’s admiration for Mourinho is no secret—he once stated, “Mourinho is my role model…he analyses opponents well and adapts to win. I’m a bit like that.” Amorim’s flexibility and pragmatism could prove advantageous for a Manchester United squad that requires a balance of structure and adaptability.

His experience under Mourinho’s mentorship also makes him familiar with the demands of top-level European football. Amorim’s attention to tactical nuances is likely to resonate with Manchester United fans, who have been longing for a manager with the strategic insight and adaptability to contend with England’s top clubs.

Challenges Awaiting Amorim at Old Trafford

Despite the excitement surrounding Amorim’s potential move, the road ahead is not without challenges. Manchester United has struggled with consistency, a predicament exacerbated by frequent managerial changes and fluctuating player performance. Moreover, the team’s defensive issues—highlighted by a high rate of shots conceded under Ten Hag—indicate an area in need of urgent improvement.

Amorim’s arrival would likely focus on reorganizing the defensive structure and implementing a cohesive tactical identity that emphasizes possession and balanced transitions. Additionally, Amorim’s history of transforming younger players into vital squad members could benefit United’s promising talents, providing a nurturing environment while raising the competitive standard. However, this will require patience from fans and support from the club’s administration, as any significant transformation takes time.

A Potential New Era for Manchester United

If Amorim’s move to Manchester United materializes, it could signify a fresh start for the club, one that prioritizes tactical intelligence and development over short-term fixes. Manchester United has faced stagnation since Ferguson’s departure, with each managerial appointment falling short of replicating the success of the past. The allure of Amorim, a progressive and modern thinker, lies in his potential to bring a systematic approach that addresses United’s current gaps.

As a young coach who understands the complexities of the modern game, Amorim is uniquely positioned to spearhead a new era at Manchester United. By integrating youth, encouraging attacking play, and fostering a competitive atmosphere, he could be the manager who finally brings stability and innovation to Old Trafford. If INEOS and the club’s hierarchy offer him the required resources and time, the Portuguese manager may very well succeed in crafting a resilient, dynamic Manchester United squad.

A Strategic Gamble with High Stakes

Ruben Amorim’s potential appointment at Manchester United is undoubtedly an ambitious move by the club’s hierarchy. As a young and talented manager, he brings a refreshing perspective and a proven ability to develop players and secure titles. Manchester United’s readiness to meet his €10 million release clause underscores their belief in his potential. Yet, success hinges not only on Amorim’s skills but also on the club’s commitment to giving him the tools to implement his vision.

If Amorim takes on the Manchester United role, his journey will require patience and unwavering support. In time, his presence could mark a pivotal turning point, ushering in a sustained era of success and establishing Manchester United once again as a Premier League powerhouse.

Manchester United Sack Erik ten Hag Amid Struggles; Ruud van Nistelrooy Appointed Interim Manager

In a decisive move reflecting their high expectations, Manchester United have terminated Erik ten Hag’s contract after a disappointing start to the season. This decision follows Sunday’s narrow 2-1 loss to West Ham United, leaving the team languishing in 14th place with just 11 points from nine games.

Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed as the interim head coach and will be leading the squad in their Carabao Cup clash against Leicester City on Wednesday. The departure of Ten Hag, who had been given a contract extension earlier this summer, underscores the urgency felt by club leadership to rejuvenate the team and chart a new path forward.

Disappointing Start Leads to Erik Ten Hag’s Dismissal

Ten Hag’s dismissal arrives just months after an extension to his contract, a show of confidence by club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS partners. However, a series of underwhelming performances across the Premier League has eroded that trust, with United managing only four wins from their first 13 games of the season. Results from the latter part of last season compounded the club’s concerns, as United finished a lowly eighth in the league standings. After the recent defeat to West Ham, concerns over Champions League qualification added further urgency to the decision. Sources close to the club revealed that top management doubted Ten Hag’s ability to reverse the poor form and steer United toward consistent success.

Van Nistelrooy Steps Up as Interim Manager

Manchester United’s leadership has turned to a familiar face in Ruud van Nistelrooy to assume temporary control of the team. Van Nistelrooy, a prolific former striker for United, previously managed PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie, where he led the club to a Dutch Cup victory in 2023.

Although his tenure as a manager is brief, his in-depth knowledge of the club and experience as a leader on the field are expected to help stabilize the squad during this transitional period. Van Nistelrooy will be supported by Rene Hake, the former Go Ahead Eagles manager who joined United’s coaching staff as part of Ten Hag’s backroom team.

Club Statement Expresses Gratitude to Ten Hag

Manchester United released an official statement thanking Ten Hag for his contributions since his arrival in April 2022. Under his leadership, United won the Carabao Cup in 2023 and claimed a surprise victory over Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final. Despite these successes, the recent downturn in league performance ultimately led to the decision to part ways. The club’s statement underscored its appreciation for Ten Hag’s efforts, acknowledging the milestones achieved under his management, and expressed well wishes for his future endeavors.

Manchester United Begin Search for Permanent Manager

Manchester United’s decision to move forward with Van Nistelrooy as a caretaker reflects a broader strategy of deliberation as the club seeks a long-term solution. According to sources, Ratcliffe, along with INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford and sporting director Dan Ashworth, has already begun evaluating potential candidates for the permanent role. During the summer, Bayern Munich’s then-manager Thomas Tuchel was a prominent candidate, but he has since accepted a role with the England national team. The club is reportedly also considering former England manager Gareth Southgate, though he has indicated he may not return to coaching until next summer.

Ratcliffe’s Vision: New Direction, New Leadership

The appointment of Van Nistelrooy and the pursuit of a fresh managerial direction signal Ratcliffe and INEOS’s commitment to revamping the club’s approach to football management. Despite initial optimism following the FA Cup victory, Ratcliffe’s end-of-season review led to significant scrutiny of the team’s structure and performance under Ten Hag. This review, which involved consultations with numerous high-profile candidates, resulted in the decision to retain Ten Hag for the current season. However, recent setbacks have compelled Ratcliffe and the board to accelerate the search for a managerial philosophy that aligns with their ambitions for the club.

Manchester United’s sacking of Erik ten Hag underscores a critical juncture for the club, which aims to regain its standing among the Premier League elite. With Van Nistelrooy at the helm in an interim capacity, United are looking for immediate improvement on the field as they approach the busy winter period. While the search for a permanent successor is already underway, the appointment of a figure deeply connected to the club’s history might just provide the stability and spirit needed to rejuvenate both the squad and its fanbase.

As United gear up for their next challenge in the Carabao Cup, supporters will be watching closely, hopeful that this managerial shift will mark the beginning of a promising new era at Old Trafford.
