House Of The Dragon Season 4: Everything We Know About The Final Season

The Dance of the Dragons is nearly over. House of the Dragon Season 4 is the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon. With Season 3’s finale having aired on August 9, 2026, all eyes are now firmly fixed on what promises to be the most dramatic, devastating and definitive chapter in the Targaryen civil war saga. Here is everything we know so far.

It Is Officially The Final Season

The most recent update on the series ending with Season 4 arrived on June 16, 2026. Condal confirmed in a press conference that he, with the help of his creative team, is “actively writing” Season 4 as the final season. He noted that Season 4 will be “the end,” and “the final act in a story we’ve been waiting to tell for many years.”

On August 5, 2024, in the aftermath of the Season 2 finale, Ryan Condal first stated that the series would conclude with the fourth season. In an episode of Escape Hatch dated November 3, 2025, Condal reaffirmed that the fourth season would be the last.

On November 20, 2025, during an HBO and HBO Max slate presentation, HBO chairman and CEO Casey Bloys shared that House of the Dragon has not definitively set an end date, saying: “We generally try to leave it to the creators to make that decision.“

When Will Season 4 Premiere?

House of the Dragon Season 4 will premiere in 2028, HBO announced in November 2025. Since the first season dropped in 2022, House of the Dragon has released like clockwork every two years, with Season 2 hitting screens on June 16, 2024, and Season 3 releasing on June 21, 2026 — despite the 2023 Writers’ Guild of America strike heavily impacting production on Season 3. So it is a relatively safe bet that House of the Dragon Season 4 will hit screens around June 2028.

How Far Along Is The Writing?

In June 2026, while promoting the launch of Season 3, Condal confirmed that the Season 4 writers’ room was already open. “We’re actively writing,” he said. “We actually are starting to turn drafts over to HBO. This is early, we will keep iterating. I don’t put the script down until they actually take it away from me in production.”

The Emmy-nominated producer continued: “We’re as far ahead as we’ve ever been at this point in crafting a new season, while we’re still delivering post-production on the old one. That goes to show the machine is up and running and on its feet. But it’s also the fourth season — the end — the final act — in a story we’ve been waiting to tell for many years. We’re all really excited about doing it.”

What Will Season 4 Cover?

With Season 3 now in the rearview mirror, Season 4 is expected to be darker and bloodier than anything seen thus far — if the creatives adhere to what is left to cover in Fire & Blood.

There are at least six events that should be adapted for the screen in Season 4: The Battle Above the Gods Eye, the Storming of the Dragonpit, the Second Battle of Tumbleton, Rhaenyra’s death and Aegon’s fate.

Condal himself has teased: “We have new characters and new dragons and new locations, all to come… that I think are gonna make it a very worthy final season.”

Who Is Expected To Return?

According to HBO, the Season 3 cast members whose characters survived the season include Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Matthew Needham, James Norton, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, and Abubakar Salim.

We won’t know the full Season 4 cast until much closer to the show’s release date.

The Wider Game of Thrones Universe

In November 2025, HBO confirmed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 and House of the Dragon Season 4 as part of a roadmap update for Game of Thrones franchise series, extending each series run through 2028.

This means Game of Thrones fans will have new dispatches out of Westeros every year through 2028.

The two shows “reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R.R. Martin’s universe continues to be,” Francesca Orsi, head of HBO drama series and films, said in a statement.

Is There A Trailer Yet?

There is no trailer for Season 4 yet, but fans can watch Season 3 in its entirety while waiting. Given the first trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3 was released in April 2026, around three months before its June premiere, a similar promotional timeline would place the first Season 4 trailer somewhere around early 2028.
