  • Spurs close to agreeing on a new contract with Korean Player of the Year, Heung-min Son

Spurs close to agreeing on a new contract with Korean Player of the Year, Heung-min Son

Tottenham Hotspur’s Heung-min Son managed to win the Korean Player of the Year award for the fifth time in his career, becoming the first-ever man to win the award so many times.

The forward has been on fire this season, and has been one of, if not the best player in the Premier League this season.

Son has managed to score 10 goals in the Premier League this season, and is the joint-second highest scorer in the league behind Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin. In 12 matchdays so far, Spurs’ number 7 has also managed to set up 4 goals.

His newfound partnership with Harry Kane has been one of the most outstanding revelations of the 20/21 season so far.

The pair have managed to share 19 goal contributions between each other and are one of the main reasons why Spurs find themselves at the top of the Premier League table for the first time in so many years.

Spurs’s current situation, however amazing, has a problem in the absence of Champions League football. Players of Son and Kane’s calibre demand to compete in the top tier of European competition.

However, it is something that almost seems guaranteed for the London whites given their performances in the league so far this season.

With that said, the club is currently in negotiations with Son regarding a contract extension at Spurs, which will see him extend his stay at the club by 5 to 6 years, according to Fabrizio Romano’s “Here We Go” podcast on Patreon.

The Korean Player of the Year recently changed his agent, and they reportedly have very good working relations with Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy. All parties are very interested and happy about signing the new deal, and it is only a matter of time before the extension is official.

  • Mourinho’s philosophy at Spurs has made them genuine title contenders this season

Mourinho’s philosophy at Spurs has made them genuine title contenders this season

Plenty of eyebrows were raised when Jose Mourinho was appointed as the coach of Tottenham Hotspur following the departure of longtime manager Mauricio Pochettino. While the Portuguese might have been underwhelming in his first season in charge, his second has been absolutely phenomenal.

While the addition of many new faces over the summer can surely be considered as a winning point for the ‘Special One’, no other change has been as productive and as visible as the newfound partnership between Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son.

The duo combined effectively for the first goal against Arsenal, in what was another candidate for goal of the season for Spurs’ number 7. The second just showed how well the two players know each other, with Son making a cheeky flick to supply Kane to finish an unstoppable shot.

The pair have now combined 30 times to score goals in the Premier League. The likes of Lampard and Drogba combined together 36 times in all. That record, held by Spurs’ London rivals, could be broken as early as later this season.

Mourinho has set them up to defend very deep, as is usual for any lineup set up by the Portuguese. The additional block is created by the wingers, Bergwijn and Son, being watchful of the opposition fullbacks and coming back to defend without the ball.

Spurs win the ball deep in or around the penalty area and rely on their passing to get the ball to one of their midfielders or Harry Kane. Once there, the two wingers, Son and Bergwijn, use their blistering pace to get up the flanks and provide more of an attacking threat.

This creates a scenario where the opposition defenders are outnumbered, should their other players be slow in getting back. And the counter-attacking spell is hence completed by an attempt at goal.

This is the philosophy that Jose Mourinho has perfected in his second season at Spurs, with Kane supplying the runners on the flanks similar to that of Bobby Firmino to Salah or Mane at Liverpool.

Should they manage to keep up this form in the games to follow, the 2020/21 season could be the year for the Londoners to complete their quest for Premier League silverware.

  • Why Roy Keane is wrong about Tottenham Hotspur not being serious title contenders?

Why Roy Keane is wrong about Tottenham Hotspur not being serious title contenders?

Following Tottenham Hotspur’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Sunday night, former Manchester United great Roy Keane said that he believes Spurs are not strong enough to be genuine title contenders. The side coached by Jose Mourinho are currently top of the table with 21 points in 8 games and lead Liverpool only on goal difference.

Keane was quoted as saying, “They have the X-factor in Mourinho and Harry Kane, I don’t think that’s enough. They were hanging on at the end at Stamford Bridge.” He also believes that Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have a better squad in terms of quality and depth, and so Spurs might struggle to contend for the title.

“I think they are on for a very good season, but a very good season is a big difference to trying to win the league title. I don’t think so. Manchester City are stronger than Spurs.”

Although Keane might be basing his opinion on the track record that Tottenham have in terms of challenging for the title, there might be some things that stand out differently.

For example, Mourinho’s team have started attacking better and already have 21 goals so far whilst retaining his original defensive philosophy and only conceding 9 goals. The Portuguese manager has also managed to gel them into a well-oiled counter-attacking outfit, which has seen them pay dividends so far.

More so, the coach is someone who possesses grit, determination and experience in winning PL titles before. And with star players who are also dressing room leaders like Kane, Son, Lloris, Alderweireld and Ndombele, to name a few, they look like serious challengers are not to be taken lightly.

Therefore, there is a very real possibility that with easier fixtures such as Crystal Palace, Fulham and Wolves upcoming, they could stack on some points and show their true title credentials. Only time will tell whether or not they can get to a position of winning the trophy but Mourinho’s men will leave no stone unturned in doing so.

  • Could Spurs finally win the Premier League title this season?

Could Spurs finally win the Premier League title this season?

Yesterday’s encounter between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City ended 2-0 in favour of the London club. The scoreline was the same as the last time the two clubs went at it in the Premier League in February of this year.

Pep Guardiola signed a contract extension right before the game against Spurs, and while there is no doubting the manager’s credibility, it is cause for concern that the Catalonian has now endured his worst start to a season at any club.

One club’s loss is another club’s gain, and Spurs have made it to the top of the Premier League table. It has been 45 years since Spurs have been at the top of the Premier League table with 9+ games played. Could this be the season that Spurs finally get their hands on the Premier League trophy?

If Jose Mourinho’s team manage to continue operating at the level that they are at right now, yes.

Consistency is the name of the game when it comes to the Premier League. Considering that the race for the title is so open this year, what the table will look like towards the end of the season is anybody’s guess at this point.

The Special One has managed to completely transform Spurs in his second campaign in charge of the club. Harry Kane’s newfound role as a provider has been key to their success this season.

The England captain provided his ninth assist in just as many games for Spurs against Manchester City. He has also managed to score 7 times this season and is clear at the top of the list of goal contributions with 16.

Heung Min Son has also been in tremendous form for Spurs and he currently leads the race for the Premier League Golden Boot.

Spurs’s solidarity in defence is also something that stands out this season. They are tied for goal difference with London rivals Chelsea at 12 each. Spurs have conceded 9 goals so far, and hold the joint best record for the least goals conceded.

Though they have managed to get to a decent start so far, a long season lies ahead for Spurs. Jose Mourinho will have to find a way to extend this run of form till the end of the season if they are to win some silverware at last.

  • Harry Kane hails Mourinho for instilling confidence into the team

Harry Kane hails Mourinho for instilling confidence into the team

Tottenham Hotspur endured a rough campaign last season. Mauricio Pochetino was sacked and Jose Mourinho was appointed as the new manager. Since joining the club, Mourinho has steadily balanced the ship and helped them to finish 6th in the Premier League and just qualify for the Europa League.

This season Tottenham Hotspur has become a genuine title contender. They had a good transfer window, bringing in the likes of Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale headlining the list of arrivals in London.

Spurs briefly led the Premier League last weekend before dropping to second and are in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. They are also in good shape to qualify for the Europa League knockout stages. Overall, Mourinho is slowly building a team capable of fighting on all fronts.

Tottenham Hotspur and England captain Harry Kane hailed Mourinho’s influence on the team.

Kane told Spurs TV: “We have had a solid start to the season, I still think there is a lot to improve on in all aspects of our game,”

“There is a long way to go, we are in a solid place at the moment, we are feeling good, but we also know in the Premier League that can turn around if you lose two or three on the bounce.”

“The last couple of wins have been important, we perhaps didn’t perform as well but we ground out the results.”

“We have got players who have won things in the changing room, we have got good experience in the changing room, good leaders in the changing room, and I feel like we are at a place now where if we get it right mentally, we can achieve things, but we are not getting carried away.”

“Obviously Jose is a winner at every level, he has come in with that aura about him and he wants to win things here.”

“It is just installing that confidence into the team, he is a great man, with great experience, so us as players can only look at that and take confidence from that. We have had a great relationship since he walked through the door.”

Tottenham will be hoping to at least finish in the top 4 of the Premier League and will obviously have a go at the Europa League trophy this season.

  • Harry Kane joins an elite club; Mourinho ready for Premier League title struggle

Harry Kane joins an elite club; Mourinho ready for Premier League title struggle

Harry Kane is arguably Tottenham’s best player in years, and the stats back that up for the England international. The forward scored his 150th goal in the Premier League and is the fastest player for the London club to reach that feat.

The England striker joins an elite club that only includes Sergio Aguero and the legendary Alan Shearer. Aguero reached 150 goals for Manchester City in 217 games, while it took Alan Shearer 212 games to reach the same feat.

Kane’s strike against West Bromwich Albion sent Tottenham to the top of the Premier League, disposing Southampton before losing the top spot to Leicester, who triumphed against Wolves in a 1-0 victory.

The 20/21 season has been an extremely open title race and a lot of teams are in contention for the crown. The gap between the rest of the league and Manchester City and Liverpool has reduced drastically this season, and a lot of clubs can stake their claim for the title.

However, Jose Mourinho has admitted that winning the Premier League title will be an extremely difficult task.

Jose Mourinho celebrated Kane’s goal as it looked his side were heading for an away draw. Mourinho, however, is not being kidded about how hard it will be to win his fourth Premier League crown.

“When a team is champion or plays for the title, there is always a direct relation to your direct opponents,” he said after edging a tight game at the Hawthorns.

“I would say that this team could be champions in many European countries.

“The Premier League is the most difficult one to be, because in the Premier League you can do a good season, can have lots of points, but in the end: Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Man United, Leicester, Arsenal. So you can have a good season and not be champion.”

  • Kane and Son could lead Tottenham Hotspur to Premier League title; Mourinho’s tactical approach is working out

Kane and Son could lead Tottenham Hotspur to Premier League title; Mourinho’s tactical approach is working out

Tottenham endured a frustrating 19/20 season, barely making it to the Europa League as the longest season in football history reached its conclusion. However, the 20/21 season has made the boys from London seem like a team reborn.

With many shrewd investments in the transfer market to meet Jose Mourinho’s demands, Spurs look like real title contenders this season with the likes of Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale headlining the list of arrivals in London.

From a more tactical perspective, Jose Mourinho must be given credit for trying to risk being different to get results.

As of the football played in the modern-day, the German tactic of Gegenpressing is the most popular. Many top clubs in Europe follow the philosophy of pressing high and keeping in possession whilst defending a high line.

Instead of choosing to follow the system that so many big clubs have implemented in their playing, Mourinho has chosen to stick to his philosophy of having players stick to their shape and defend deep.

At the mantle of Spurs’ counter-attacking prowess is the partnership between Heung Min Son and Harry Kane. The England captain has been deployed as a very different player this season, and his role on the pitch has become vastly different from the beastly goal-getter that we are used to seeing.

Kane, instead, leads the race for the highest number of assists this season with 7 goals set up by the forward already. Son, on the other hand, shares the top spot for the Golden Boot with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Jose Mourinho has praised the partnership between the duo, that has resulted in as many as 9 goal contributions involving only two of Spurs’ star attackers.

The Portuguese tactician acknowledged the fact that the rapport between Son and Kane has risen from their time under former boss Mauricio Pochettino, and proceeded to give the Argentinian his share of credit for the deadly strike partnership that has put Spurs in the hunt for their first piece of silverware in over 13 years.

  • Wayne Rooney tells who should be the No. 1 transfer target for Manchester United

Wayne Rooney tells who should be the No. 1 transfer target for Manchester United

Manchester United has been a long term admirer of England international Jadon Sancho. They have made him their transfer priority this summer, though United haven’t been able to come to an agreement with Dortmund.

Former Manchester United player Wayne Rooney has now expressed his views on this matter. He wrote in his The Sunday Times column about who should be United’s No. 1 transfer target.

Rooney wrote: “Jadon Sancho is a top player, but I find it odd that he has been Manchester United’s transfer priority. Why consider paying close to £100 million for someone similar to talent you’ve got already? United have Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial and where would Sancho’s arrival leave Mason Greenwood, who plays in the same position and is of similar age?”

“I’d rather put that £100 million towards trying to get Harry Kane. Yes, getting Kane out of Tottenham would be difficult, maybe impossible, but United are a club who should always make an effort to sign the very best players and Kane is exactly what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs, as is Erling Haaland, who United missed out on last year — a genuine No 9.”

Manchester United have now almost signed former PSG player Edison Cavani on a free transfer. So there problem with a genuine No 9 is somewhat sorted atleast for now.

But what Rooney said in his column is a matter of concern. United already have Rashford who is a similar talent to Sancho. Mason Greenwood is also developing into a star but if United signs Sancho, Greenwood wouldn’t be getting chance in the first team regularly.

Rather than spending millions, United can, however, focus on developing Greenwood and meanwhile striking a deal for a few defenders, preferably a left-back and a centre-back. This would give solidity to their defence and give their midfielders and attackers more chance of controlling the game.

  • Carlos Vinicius to Tottenham Hotspur on loan edges closer as chairman Daniel Levy continues summer spending

Carlos Vinicius to Tottenham Hotspur on loan edges closer as chairman Daniel Levy continues summer spending

Benfica have lost yet another player to the English Premier League, albeit temporarily. Very recently, defender Ruben Dias secured a move to Manchester City. And this time, it is striker Carlos Vinicius.

The Brazilian forward will be moving to Tottenham on an initial loan deal with an option to buy. Spurs will reportedly pay a €3 million loan fee and have an option to buy for €45 million next summer. Vinicius is due for medical checks in London on Friday, ahead of the proposed move.

Spurs manager Jose Mourinho has long wanted an efficient and recognised backup to star hitman Harry Kane. And after numerous links with Arkadiusz Milik, Andrea Belotti, Josh King and Wout Weghorst, they have zeroed in on Carlos Vinicius.

But what is it that this player brings to the table and offers differently? For starters, Vinicius has excellent mobility and pace which will see him prove to be a handful for PL defenders. He is often seen drifting to the flanks to leave spaces in the middle and can also deliver good crosses at times. With a height of 190cm, he is also a potent threat to win aerial duels for link-up play in the attacking third and score header goals.

Vinicius also has a devastating left foot which he uses to good effect. With the ability to switch it around, his shots are mostly powerful and curled – testing and beating the goalkeeper more often than not.

Vinicius joined Benfica in the 2018/19 season from Napoli. He had previously been loaned out to Monaco and Rio Ave for more game-time. After a successful season, he did not disappoint for Benfica. The striker scored 18 goals from 33 appearances in the league.

Therefore, Mourinho will be hoping that ahead of an exhausting yet pulsating season with a lot of games, Carlos Vinicius is the impact substitute that can give an extra edge to Tottenham’s gameplay and results.

  • Tottenham looking to sign Milan Skriniar and reinforce Mourinho’s centre-back options

Tottenham looking to sign Milan Skriniar and reinforce Mourinho’s centre-back options

Tottenham have been on a streak of signings in the transfer market. After re-signing Lo Celso from Real Betis, they announced Hojberg and Doherty from fellow Premier League clubs Southampton and Wolves earlier this summer.

Very recently, they announced the moves of Reguilon and Gareth Bale both from Real Madrid. It is this kind of ambition which questions Daniel Levy’s strategy having earlier admitted that it is tough to find funds to splurge in the market for such quality players.

Nevertheless, they are stealthily moving forward for another target. And this time it is 25-year-old Inter centre back Milan Skriniar. With over 250 appearances at club level, Skriniar brings quality to a side whose current options are Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier.

The Slovakian is also quite versatile, having played at right-back and defensive midfield at times. However, the transfer is not expected to go through quite easily for a host of reasons. Firstly, the 60 million pounds valuation by Inter is not feasible for Tottenham. Secondly, it is rumoured that PSG are also monitoring the situation very closely.

However, what has pleased Spurs fans are the moves for Reguilon and former player Gareth Bale. The former solves the problems Mourinho has been having at left-back, with Ben Davies injured often and Danny Rose actively pushing for a move away from the club. Reguilon was also phenomenal for Sevilla last season, having made a fine impression in that Europa League final.

And as far as Gareth Bale is concerned, he immediately slots into that right-wing position. He will be looking to form a great partnership with the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli. So if Spurs indeed manage to sign someone like Skriniar, they will have a more than competent first XI that brims with talent and on their day can beat any team regardless of their status.
