Why Giroud DESERVES to start for Chelsea against Leeds this weekend?

When asked about the fate of Olivier Giroud at Chelsea after the international break, Frank Lampard said that he was a vital part of the club going forward. If the Chelsea manager or anyone still had any doubts regarding Giroud’s capabilities, they have been silenced by his single-handed decimation of Sevilla.

“Four goals at this level and the quality of the goals, individual aspects from Olivier [Giroud] and team aspects in the first half, from back to front the team were great, amazing solo performance from Olivier,” Lampard told BT Sport.

“Olivier is reliable, full stop. Not just for us but his international goals for France, he’s up there with great French individuals, he’s got great statistics. I’m not too bothered about that in a way but I am bothered about what he gives us on the pitch.”

“There couldn’t be a team-mate there that the players are happier for because of the way Olivier is around the training pitch and in the games.”

Giroud became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League last night. He also became only the second player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League for Chelsea after Drogba. And only the Frenchman’s was perfect.

When asked about the possibility of Giroud continuing his brilliant form on the pitch through a start against Leeds in the league next, Lampard said:

“We’ll have to see – it’s a tight turnaround but it’s four goals in a game. It’s not just his performance but when you play him and utilise his strengths and his speed, there’s a real balance in the rest of the team.”

Considering that Werner and Abraham are also contesting a starting berth, the competition is no doubt difficult. However, Giroud now has the numbers on not one, but two occasions to back him up.

The 34-year-old is only seven goals behind Thierry Henry in becoming the all-time top scorer for France. If he manages to carry on this goalscoring form, it is certain that he will break Henry’s record in the days to come.

Lampard must give Giroud a chance to take the spotlight this weekend in the Premier League, to not only show his faith in the forward but to also help convince Giroud to stay at the club.

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has insisted that former teammate Frank Lampard can guide the West Londoners to the Premier League title, as well as the Champions League title this season.

‘I think they [Chelsea] are genuine contenders,’ Cole said.

‘I think all the English sides, you can’t discount any of them from going all the way in the Champions League because of the quality and the strength of our league.’

‘I don’t feel there is any weaknesses in the Chelsea side at the moment. I feel there aren’t any glaring weaknesses, there are areas to improve on. But if you look at the last two months, certainly since Chilwell, Mendy, and Silva have got into the back four, the clean sheets have started to happen.’

‘We look safe and secure from set pieces. So those things have improved dramatically from last season. I think there’s still areas where Chelsea can improve and they will improve.’

‘But certainly, I put them down as contenders to win the Champions League and the [Premier] League this year. But as well the other teams, your Man City’s, Liverpool, even United have a rich tradition in is competition. I think English clubs will fare well this year.’

‘Bayern Munich I think are rightly so the favourites being the champions, but I would put the money on English sides going deep into the competition and at least one of them getting to the final. I think it’s a good year for us.’

Cole also mentioned that the spending of over 200 million pounds in the summer has tightened up all the aspects of Chelsea’s game that were previously lacking. The addition of the defensive player’s, as the Englishman mentioned, has made Chelsea’s defense look like a team reborn.

The attacking side of things looks very promising as well, with the likes of Havertz, Pulisic, Werner, Abraham, and Ziyech right there in the limelight to dominate games once they find their footing for good in England.

Chelsea sit at the top of their Champions League table, and face Sevilla away from home tonight. They are currently third in the Premier League, after their goalless draw against London rivals Spurs, and have made a very positive turnaround since the arrival of Edouard Mendy.

Jose Mourinho is not considering Tottenham Hotspur as a title contender, Lampard disagrees

Jose Mourinho went back to Stamford Bridge to face Frank Lampard’s Chelsea. The match ended in a draw as both teams failed to break the deadlock.

After the match, Tottenham Hotspur see them at the top of the table again with 21 points in 10 games. In the post-match press conference, Jose Mourinho said, “Tottenham is not a candidate. We are not even in the race. We are not a horse. I don’t know what the word is. We are the small, young horses. We are just a pony.”

Mourinho was unhappy with his team’s performance though. He said, “A draw at Stamford Bridge is usually a positive thing and staying top of the league is also a positive thing. But my dressing room isn’t happy with that and that is fantastic.”

“Nobody gambled today or tried to change the direction of the game. Everybody was in a situation of one mistake wins the game, especially in the last 15 minutes.”- he added.

Frank Lampard disagreed with Mourinho’s claim. Mourinho also claimed Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City are the main challengers for the title. Lampard replied, “It’s Jose’s call to say it as he sees it from his end, but from the outside, they are top of the league. If we’re contenders then they have to be contenders.

“They have invested heavily – they’ve got people like Gareth Bale sitting on the bench, Dele Alli’s not here. There is a strong squad there.”

“So I think we are all competing, but Jose can say it as he sees it.”

Jose Mourinho always loves to play mind games with his opponents. This claim is surely one of them!

  • Gary Neville thinks there is a possibility of a Jose Mourinho vs Frank Lampard title race

Gary Neville thinks there is a possibility of a Jose Mourinho vs Frank Lampard title race

Liverpool and Manchester City have been the most dominant sides in the Premier League over the last three seasons. City won the title for two successive times under Pep Guardiola before Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool snatched the Premier League title with utmost dominance last season.

But the 2020-21 Premier League season seems a bit different. There isn’t any outright winner in the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool. Chelsea have invested heavily in their squad this summer after facing transfer ban for the previous transfer windows. The other Premier League sides outside the Big Six have also improved and have almost removed the gap.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville thinks that this season can be a title race between a former manager and his player. Frank Lampard has got numerous success under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea but the two are now in different dugouts. Mourinho has transformed the side with some big signings like Bale and Reguilon and forming a terrific partnership between Kane and Son. They are looking like serious title contenders and are on top of the table, alongside Liverpool, after beating Manchester City by 2-0 last weekend.

lampard mourinho Gary Neville thinks there is a possibility of a Jose Mourinho vs Frank Lampard title race

Neville said on The Gary Neville Podcast: “I’m excited for next Sunday with Chelsea playing Tottenham.”

“It’s an interesting season. We thought Chelsea might be interesting at the start of the season as they have a young, exciting squad – it looks like Frank Lampard is starting to get it right. He was still searching for his best team in the first few matches to try and fit everyone in. There were certain players that weren’t fit but now they are and he’s starting to work it out. They look pretty strong.”

“Is it a season where Jose Mourinho and Frank Lampard being up against each other in a title race? I thought Liverpool would run away with it, but not now, not the with Virgil van Dijk injury. That’s the one that is the gamechanger and exposes them a lot more.”

With the evolution of the beautiful game over the years, priority is being given to the safety of the players. One of the best examples of that is the immediate stoppage directed by the referee when there is a head injury involved.

Manchester United legend Nobby Stiles recently passed away after a month-long battle with dementia. His contemporaries and England teammates Jack Charlton, Martin Peters and Ray Wilson also had the disease before their deaths.

In 2019, the PFA Charity-funded study, FIELD, found that footballers had 3.5 times the death rate from neurodegenerative conditions than the general population.

The FA has plans to invest in research that helps determine whether heading the ball makes players prone to brain diseases. However, right now, children under 12 years old are advised to not be heading the ball.

PFA chairman Ben Purkiss said: “Science has been developing quickly in this area, and we need to make an urgent intervention based on the evidence that is available now.

“A reduction of heading in training is a practical and straightforward step. We will be engaging with members, former members and their families to work on this area within the scope of the PFA’s new advisory group, where decisions will be made on the basis of expert advice.”

Frank Lampard agreed with the idea of not having the younger children engage in heading the ball, saying:

“The rules need to be stronger to make sure we’re not making younger children head it if they don’t need to. In the development game, that’s more than possible.

“We have to start with youth football. When children are developing, we can control the levels of training. Anything we can do to make things safer, we should.

“I think we can work up the pyramid. Already, I’m certainly considering it in terms of how we train here because of the seriousness of the issue.

“At the professional level, the small gains are huge and we need to make sure we’re working under the same guidelines and trust each other that we are.

“At the moment, there are no guidelines. It has to be something that goes across the board.”

Speaking on the Eddie Hearn: No Passion, No Point podcast, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard admitted that he has trouble recalling some of the biggest moments of his career as a player for the Blues.

‘Christine my wife jokes at me all the time because she will go “Do you remember that? Do you remember when we travelled on the way back from Bayern Munich when you won the Champions League and Drogba was dancing and all that?”

‘I can hardly remember a thing, it’s something that I don’t get upset about, but I just wish I could have those moments.

‘I am so bad with those things, and it’s a really strange phenomenon for me.

‘Even though I know I have been like that, and I want to sit and take a moment, I still don’t do it. I still don’t.’

To this day, Frank Lampard is considered the greatest player in the history of Chelsea. His tremendous goalscoring records and his ability to change the fate of a match through his prowess made him a force to be reckoned with in his prime.

Lampard won the Premier League title thrice with Chelsea, defending it successfully in 2006 after winning it first in 2005. He won the league title again in 2010 with the Blues.

The Chelsea number 8 also won four FA Cups and two League Cups with Chelsea. However, his greatest accomplishment without a doubt is winning the Champions League in 2011/12 on that magical night in Munich. The last trophy that the legendary player won during his career was the Europa League in 2012/13.

The midfielder turned manager is the only player to feature in the top 5 of both the top goalscorers’ list in the league, as well as the highest number of assists in the competition, with 177 goals and 102 assists to his name.

  • Frank Lampard: “A manager gets 50 problems a day… but I love it and couldn’t live without it.”

Frank Lampard: “A manager gets 50 problems a day… but I love it and couldn’t live without it.”

Frank Lampard is one of the best midfielders of his generation. The Chelsea legend, who also played for Manchester City in the latter stage of his career has now turned out to be an exciting manager, managing his former club Chelsea.

During 13 years as a player at Chelsea, Lampard became their record goalscorer, winning three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League.

The former England international started his managerial career with Derby County and was almost successful in promoting them to the Premier League but only fall short in the playoff.

Lampard then took on the reigns of Chelsea from Maurizio Sarri did a good job despite Chelsea facing a transfer ban. He promoted the youth and has got some really valuable players including the likes of Mason Mount, Recee James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham.

As, Chelsea’s transfer ban was lifted this summer, Lampard has done an excellent job with the recruitment part and is now building a team capable to fight for every trophy available.

Lampard’s Chelsea is now slowly becoming a force to reckon with in the Premier League. The once-a-successful player is now slowly going in the right path to becoming a successful manager.

    Frank Lampard

Speaking to Eddie Hearn’s No Passion No Point podcast on BBC Sounds, Frank Lampard said he knew he risked damaging his legacy as a player at Chelsea by becoming the manager.

The 42-year-old said: “The life of a player is a bubble of selfishness to a degree. The facts and reality is I realise now it’s much harder than playing in terms of it being consuming,”

“The life of a manager is 25 people in the squad, staff in the building, problems with different departments. It’s so far removed from football.”

“When you work for your coaching badges, you have to put time in. Then when you start doing it, you have to practise, you have to fail, get better, fail and have relationships with people you never had as a player.”

“Players can easily sit there and say they want to be a manager, then they start the road and say: ‘Actually, I want to be a pundit.’ I respect it because being a pundit is tough as well but in terms of management I wanted to test the water.

A manager gets 50 problems a day. It’s much more consuming but I love it and couldn’t live without it.

Lampard admits he made “a lot of mistakes” and was “finding his feet” during his first year as a manager – at Derby County – before joining Chelsea in July 2019.

He added: “I can be really open that it helped me get the job – playing 13 years at the club helped me get the job,”

“I had to put my ego at the door a bit and say that I might ruin what I achieved in 13 years to a degree – because if it doesn’t go well, I will be judged harshly and quickly.”

“I am so driven personally that my biggest fear is myself. If I try to pull the wool over your eyes as Chelsea manager, it’s not going to work.”

“My football career put me in a decent position. So if that job is taken away from me, as long as I go in thinking ‘can I do the best job?’ then I think that if I have done the best I can, I will be pretty happy.”

Werner reveals Lampard has given him the responsibility of taking penalties

Chelsea’s Jorginho has had a pretty rough 2020 after being dropped from the side after football returned following the lockdown.

His most recent problem has to do with one of the most unique aspects of him as a player, his penalty technique.

jorginho penalty miss Werner reveals Lampard has given him the responsibility of taking penalties

For his former club Napoli, Jorginho technically scored from every penalty he took. Although he missed one, he scored off the rebound.

His first penalty miss for Chelsea came against Manchester City in the 2019 Carabao Cup as Ederson guessed the right way in the shootout

The Italian missed his first normal time penalty against Liverpool this season when Alisson saved his effort from the spot.

The vice-captain was given a chance to make amends in the Champions League against Krasnodar, but hit the post and failed to convert.

Frank Lampard explained how it is okay for the penalty taker to miss from the spot after the victory in Russia.

“If you’re going to take penalties as regularly as he does – and I did – you’re going to miss some,”

“You might actually miss a couple because of the level of goalkeeper and the pressured situation.

“It was not normal that he had such a great record – it was unique and stood out. I’ve got no worries with his confidence and he shouldn’t have. I’m not concerned about that at all but I’ll speak to him about it myself.”

werner abraham chelsea Werner reveals Lampard has given him the responsibility of taking penalties

Frank Lampard has since asked Timo Werner to take the penalties for Chelsea, as the forward revealed himself. Here is what the German forward had to say after the game against Rennes:

“We played very well today. Both penalties were the right decision – the red card was also good for us as it meant we could control the game.

“Before the game, the manager told me that if we got a penalty I should take it. Jorginho is cool with that.

“I hope I can continue to take them When you want to score 20 or more goals you have to take a few penalties, so I am happy.”

This responsibility on the shoulders of Werner will surely take him an extra step in the race for the Golden Boot. Considering the number of spot-kicks given away these days in the league, it might be no surprise if the German scores 10+ goals from 12 yards out.

Chelsea faced Krasnodar in their second match of the 20/21 Champions League group stages. Following a 0-0 draw with Sevilla at home, the Blues had built a good foundation at the back. And they managed to build on that very foundation yesterday.

Hakim Ziyech started his first official game for Chelsea in the 0-4 victory. The only other time the Moroccan started for the Blues came in a friendly against Brighton.

The first half proved to be challenging for Frank Lampard’s side, as the Russians were quick and precise in their passing. They managed to pounce on mistakes made by Chelsea, but could not beat Mendy, who was solid between the sticks once again.

Ziyech showed his creativity in the first half, with dangerous balls into the box. However, Chelsea really found their stride after the half time as they managed to put three past the hosts with Ziyech scoring his first Chelsea goal.

Frank Lampard was all praises for the encouraging performance from his new signing, as he appreciated the work put in by the player to return to full fitness following an injury.

Lampard said: “He brought a lot of quality and calmness when he was on the pitch, and got a well-deserved goal. His performance was very, very good when you consider he hasn’t started a match since March when the Dutch league finished.”

We saw a lot of glimpses of that today, and he will get better.”

“We brought him in to do a job, maybe people have forgotten a bit because we signed him in January and he missed the start of the season, but tonight he showed he is here.”

Frank Lampard explains the controversial inclusion of Petr Cech in PL squad

The moment you think 2020 has shown you enough to not be surprised by anything anymore, it one-ups itself. The latest in the list of shockers that 2020 has produced has to do with the club that has not left the spotlight for a minute in a very long time.

Chelsea FC have included technical director Petr Cech as a fourth goalkeeper alongside Kepa Arrizabalaga, Edouard Mendy and Willy Caballero in their 25-man squad for the 20/21 Premier League season.

    Petr Cech

This sees one of the Blues’ best-ever goalkeepers make a comeback from retirement to help out his club. Petr Cech retired from professional football after the end of the 2018-19 season which saw Chelsea win the Europa League against Cech’s Arsenal. The keeper then moved back to Stamford Bridge and has taken up his role as a technical director at the club.

As of recently, the 38-year-old has been working with the keepers at the club, as shown in Chelsea’s training videos. The fact that he has been included in the squad itself now suggests an unbelievable foreshadowing of the Blues’ decision.

cech Frank Lampard explains the controversial inclusion of Petr Cech in PL squad

    While it is unlikely that Cech will play a minute of Premier League football this season, his inclusion was explained by manager Frank Lampard as follows;

“Pete has been training with the goalkeepers for a few weeks now, he is passing on quality.

“We had a space in the squad and with this year and Covid it is nice to know that he is there if we need him.

“He is fit. He is still relatively young when he took on his role. Whether we see him much I don’t know, we will see about isolation and Covid.

“It’s not done for the romance of what he has done before. It’s not something I would expect to happen, but if we are in crisis then there are few people better to have around than Cech.”

While it is hard to argue with the logic that the coronavirus pandemic could impact the squad in any way, the inclusion of the Champions League winning keeper is sure to turn some heads for fans of the Blues.
