Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born in 1995 to a farming family in Maharashtra, Swapnil Kusale was introduced to sports through the government’s Krida Prabhodini program in 2009. After a year of rigorous physical training, he chose shooting as his primary sport and has been sponsored by Lakshya Sports since 2013. Kusale’s dedication and talent quickly became evident as he rose through the ranks in national and international competitions.

Rise Through the Ranks

Kusale’s breakthrough came in 2015 when he won gold in the 50m rifle prone at the Asian Shooting Championships (junior category). He further cemented his status by defeating seasoned shooters like Gagan Narang and Chain Singh to win the 59th National Shooting Championship in the 50m rifle prone. His consistent performance continued with another gold at the 61st National Championship in the 50m rifle three positions event.

Olympic Qualification and Selection

Kusale secured his spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics by earning an Olympic quota for India at the World Championship in Cairo in 2022. Despite finishing fifth in the final selection trials in Bhopal, his strong performance in previous trials ensured his selection for the Indian team. His journey to the Olympics is a testament to his resilience and unwavering commitment to the sport.

Kneeling Position

Kusale’s performance in the kneeling position was steady, though he had a slow start with scores of 50.8 and 50.9 in the first two series. He improved slightly with a 51.6 in the third series, placing him in sixth position with a total of 153.3 points.

Prone Position

In the prone position, Kusale’s performance improved significantly, scoring 52.7, 52.2, and 51.9 in the three series. This brought his total to 310.1 points, moving him up to fifth place.

Standing Position

The standing position, known for its potential to dramatically change rankings, saw Kusale excel. After a nine-minute break, he scored 10.6 and 10.3, followed by 9.1, 10.1, and 10.3, moving him to third place with 411.6 points. As eliminations began, Kusale maintained his composure, scoring consistently to secure his bronze medal with a final score of 451.4.
