Maruti Suzuki Fronx is also one of the popular sub-4m vehicles in India. The Cup Coupe crossover, based on the Baleno, has sold very well in that country and even attracts a Toyota equivalent called the Taisor. Unlike the Fronx which is a street-legal car, recent reports claim an ADAS version of this will be used on current testing in public streets. But is it a sign of an impending launch or just an India export-spec model being tested here?
Maruti Suzuki Fronx ADAS Spotted
We can thank automotive enthusiast Kartikey Bansal for the spy shot of an Indian Maruti Suzuki Fronx ADAS variant. The car has been caught on video and the red temporary registration plates from Haryana are visible with a bit of camouflage. What the spy shot shows is that this version of Fronx ADAS includes a radar-based sensor system to observe elements on the road, such as cars, motorcycles, pedestrians, or cyclists, and take decisions in conjunction with an internal camera. ADAS will also be featured on the upcoming eVX.
Maruti Suzuki currently does not offer ADAS in any of its vehicles, including those rebadged from Toyota like the Invicto. However, should Maruti implement this system on a relatively lower-priced car like the Fronx then it will be quite an innovative step for bringing safety to their vehicles. But then again, the Fronx ADAS version sighted in India could very well be an export spec and not meant for sale here. Maruti Suzuki has started exporting the Fronx to Japan, where features like AEB are mandatory. The test mule observed in India appears similar to the Japan-spec model.
Maruti Suzuki’s lineup has six airbags, which are the most important safety features available at the moment. Traditionally, the brand has also attracted scrutiny for poor safety ratings among its vehicles. If launched, the Fronx ADAS will offer Maruti Suzuki a substantial gain in improving the safety of vehicles in India. Along with the ADAS module, this Fronx features front parking sensors – a fitting addition given that these are not offered on an India-spec model. In India, the Fronx is powered by a 1.2L NA petrol unit and a 1.0L 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine, with rumors suggesting that the facelifted Fronx might feature a 1.2L strong hybrid engine. However, the launch of the Fronx ADAS variant in India remains unconfirmed.
