Sunil Chhetri’s failed transfer to 2nd tier Spanish club in summer 2023 revealed

In spite of being 39, Sunil Chhetri is by far the best player in the Indian National team contingent. And his age wasn’t a deterring factor for a second tier Spanish side this summer, who inquired about his availability for a transfer. However, as revealed by Marcus Mergulhao, he decided to stay at Bengaluru FC and follow through with his hopes of retiring in India.

The Indian skipper has scored 93 goals for the national team in 143 games, and is one of the highest international goalscorers in history. Although he recently mentioned that he is entering the twilight years of his career, his relentless pressing and work rate on the pitch suggests otherwise.

Sunil Chhetri failed transfer to Spain revealed

The identity of the club that asked for the forward is uncertain, but they could not agree a deal with Bengaluru since the player was not willing to move.

This season, Sunil Chhetri captained a young Indian side to the Asian Games in China before resuming his duty with Bengaluru FC only days after returning. He has scored two goals in four games this season, and will be hopeful of getting the team to the knockout stages this season.

Chhetri had a brief spell abroad in his career when he moved to Sporting Lisbon’s B team in 2013. But, he was returned back to Churchill Brothers only months later, after which he signed for Bengaluru FC to start a remarkable run that has lasted almost a decade, albeit with a brief spell for Mumbai City in between.
