The police brutality in killing Geroge Floyd in Minneapolis had caused worldwide outrage in support of ‘Black Lives Matter’. The movement got support from every corner of the world. It was an unthinkable incident.
Now, another brutal incident has happened in Thoothukudi district in Tamil Nadu, India. Jeyaraj and Fenix, both the father and son were arrested for allegedly keeping their shop open past the permitted hours, with a lockdown still being imposed to curb the spread of Coronavirus.
They were kept in police custody overnight and both of them died a few days later. Their family have accused the police of brutally beating them and torturing them to death during police custody.
This police brutality has shaken the whole of India. This has become a media outrage in search of ‘Justice for Jeyaraj and Fenix’.
Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri has come out in support of Jeyaraj and Fenix and called for justice by taking action against the policemen responsible for their deaths. He tweeted, “What happened with Jeyaraj and Fenix is beyond acceptable. Nothing will give them their lives back, but justice should set a precedent and a very strong one at that.”

The two policemen involved in the alleged torture have been suspended. But people are demanding for more severe punishment for such a heinous crime. Not only Sunil Chhetri but also many other Indian stars have called for ‘Justice for Jeyaraj and Fenix’.
Every single life matters. We should make sure that this act of brutality is meted out with justice, and I am not sure justice will be any solace for the family of #JeyarajandFenix and my thoughts are with them.

Justice should be served to Jeyaraj and Fenix as both of them in no way have done something to earn such brutal deaths.
