Suga, a member of the K-pop boy band BTS, has announced his upcoming military enlistment date. Here’s an overview of the role that individuals are required to fulfill during their military service. Suga, the rapper and songwriter of the South Korean boy band BTS, is scheduled to begin his South Korean military service on September 22, 2023.
Everything Related to Suga Joining the Military
As reported by Yonhap, Suga, who is 30 years old, will fulfill his military duty through an alternative service rather than combat duty. In South Korea, all able-bodied men are obligated to complete their military service before the age of thirty, typically serving for approximately two years.
However, individuals with health issues may be assigned to alternative service roles. This can involve working in various government agencies and welfare institutions such as schools, government buildings, nursing homes, and subway stations.
The duration of service for alternative service positions is three months longer than regular army service, totaling 21 months, which includes three weeks of basic military training.
It is speculated that Suga, the K-pop star, may have been exempted from combat duties due to a surgery he underwent in 2020 to repair a torn labrum. However, there has been no official confirmation from Bighit or the artist himself regarding the specifics of his service role.
The military enlistment of BTS members has been a topic of discussion in South Korea for some time. Nevertheless, the group members have consistently expressed their willingness to fulfill their duty when called upon by the nation.
Up until 2013, the South Korean military had an “entertainment soldier” system in which soldiers were tasked with producing radio and TV content to promote military ideals. However, this system was discontinued due to complaints of unfairness.
As for Suga’s bandmates, Jin and J-Hope, who have already enlisted in the military, they have been assigned combat duties. Jin enlisted on December 13, 2022, and serves as an Assistant Drill Instructor in the 5th Infantry Division in Yeoncheon, while J-Hope, who enlisted on February 26, 2023, works as an assistant instructor at the 36th Infantry Division Recruit Training Center.
