Ajax has reached an agreement with domestic rivals Feyenoord for the transfer of Steven Berghuis. The deal between the two teams has been reported by Fabrizio Romano and Mike Verweij and is expected to be announced in the next few days.
The Amsterdam club will pay Feyenoord €4 million for the player, and Berghuis has agreed on a four-year contract with them until 2025. He will have to undergo his medicals for the transfer before being officially announced as an Ajax player.
Berghuis operates as a right-winger and has 28 caps for the Dutch national team. He has scored 2 goals for the Oranje since making his debut in 2016. The winger has been a part of Feyenoord since 2016, originally joining the team on loan from Premier League club Watford. They later made his transfer permanent for €4.5 million, and he is now a player for the biggest club in the Eredivisie.
The 29-year-old had 1 year left on his contract with Feyenoord. They could not agree with him for an extension, and the only two choices they were left with were either selling him this summer for a fee or letting him go for nothing next year. While the destination isn’t ideal for fans or staff of Feyenoord, Ajax will surely be delighted to have a player in his prime join them ahead of the new season.
