Steam is the most popular video game distribution platform, and it’s been in development for ChromeOS for quite some time. The good news is that the official launch is approaching. At Google’s Games Developer Summit 2022, an alpha version of Steam for ChromeOS was announced. As a result, Steam is now compatible with Samsung Chromebooks running ChromeOS, as well as other Chromebooks.

It’s worth mentioning, though, that the Steam Alpha is still in its early stages. This means you won’t be able to use the feature for the time being. Google has made it obvious that it is serious about bringing Android games to the PC.

For those curious, Google has also revealed the minimum system requirements for running Steam Alpha on Chromebooks. According to Google, a Chromebook with an 11th generation Core i5 or i7 processor and a minimum of 7 gigabytes of RAM will be necessary to run Steam Alpha. This certainly eliminates all of the low-cost Chromebooks from consideration.

If you’re interested in learning more about Steam Alpha for Chromebooks, visit Google’s community forum. The post is live, but there is no definite information on when the service will be live at the time of writing.

It’s also worth noting that the service will only be available to a select group of ChromeOS users via the dev channel. Google has also introduced a new game overlay for ChromeOS devices that works with select Android games.
