Since the middle of 2020, everyone has been at home more often than not, watching the news. We gravitate to digital forms of entertainment, such as YouTube or video games, because we’re stuck at home. Today, we’ll talk about the latter, as Steam’s popularity continues to climb.

In the nearly two decades since its inception in 2003, the service has seen numerous modifications, including game releases, store updates, and more. It’s also one of, if not the most popular, PC gaming stores. This trend hasn’t changed as we get closer to February 2022.

Steam debuted with around 28 million concurrent users in 2022 and has now surpassed 29.2 million. This current surge represents a significant increase in numbers. With 28.2 million users at the start of the year, Valve set a new concurrent record, and two weeks later, it’s down to the final million before the 30 million mark is reached.

According to SteamDB, the all-time peak concurrent users on Steam is 29,201,174 at the time of writing.

When it comes to figuring out why Steam has such high numbers, there are a variety of possibilities. One such cause is that Valve’s flagship games Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and DOTA 2 have exceptionally active player bases, with over 900K and 787K active gamers, respectively, in the last 24 hours.

In the game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, another example can be found. The game had recently transitioned to a free-to-play basis. In just the last 24 hours, the hugely popular battle royale game has amassed a player base of over 600,000 Steam players, which is an outstanding sign of a thriving video game.

Steam’s user base continues to grow, and it appears that by 2022’s midpoint, the platform will have surpassed 30 million users. It’s reasonable to suppose that by the end of 2022, they’ll have surpassed 35 million members, if not more.
