Steam’s number of concurrent users has risen steadily since the outbreak began, and it broke its record this month. Steam has already shattered its concurrent usage record, with over 28 million players using the platform at the same time this month, less than a week into 2022.

That’s according to SteamDB data, although as analyst Daniel Ahmad points out, Valve has had tremendous growth in recent years, with the coronavirus-induced quarantine contributing to the numbers.

Steam witnessed over 20 million individuals utilize the platform at once not long after the WHO officially proclaimed the epidemic, sending many people throughout the world into self-isolation. This shattered its previous record of 18.8 million, set only a month previously.

Steam hit 28 million concurrent users today.

Concurrent users saw strong growth during 2020, due to the impact of COVID-19, but it's clear that growth also continued to persist in 2021.

Peaks reached each Jan:

Jan 2019: 17.6m
Jan 2020: 18.3m
Jan 2021: 25.4m
Jan 2022: 28.2m https://t.co/iBRLqLGqAw

It broke it again in early 2021, with over 25 million, but only a month later, it peaked at over 26 million. It smashed it twice again in November, with over 27.3 million viewers. It’s unclear whether Steam will be able to keep all of these new customers, but the stats suggest that the platform, and by extension the PC format, is attracting a growing number of consumers.

Dying Light 2, the PC port of God Of War, and, right at the top, Elden Ring was among the most wishlisted games on Steam at the start of the year. Once the Steam Deck is released, Steam’s user counts will most certainly spike again.

The console is effectively a portable PC, making it an appealing purchase not only for existing Steam users but also for newbies who have struggled to break into PC gaming for various reasons.
