Just when Star City seemed ready to move on from tragedy, its penultimate episode delivered a twist that flips the entire season on its head.

## What Happens In Star City Episode

Titled “Plow Deep,” the episode jumps forward nine months after the shocking mid-season explosion believed to have killed three cosmonauts aboard the secret Venera mission. With the disaster covered up as a training accident, Star City has moved on under a new, less capable Chief Designer, while Sergei — once a key engineer — has been sidelined to background work after the fallout.

While reviewing data, Sergei notices a strange anomaly and manages to get access to a secure comms channel. He contacts Anastasia, now commanding the new Salyut-1 space station, and asks her to test a specific frequency. The signal she relays back contains compressed data using Sergei’s own unique algorithm — proof that only the Venera spacecraft could be transmitting it.

## Why This Twist Matters

The reveal means the three cosmonauts presumed dead may actually be alive and heading back to Earth — a discovery that completely upends the season’s central tragedy and the political cover-up built around it. It also raises new stakes: if the returning spacecraft is discovered before authorities are ready, the consequences could be severe for everyone involved in the original cover-up.

As a spinoff of [For All Mankind](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_All_Mankind_(TV_series)), Star City continues that franchise’s tradition of blending space-race ambition with personal and political stakes, and this cliffhanger sets up what looks like an explosive season finale.
