In episode 3, we finally find out who number 001 is: Hwang In-ho, aka The Frontman from season 1. His presence is therefore believed to be a deliberate attempt to sabotage Gi-Hun’s quest to terminate the Squid Game once and for all. Player 001 also tries during the episode to convince Gi-Hun to give up his scheme to end the game, telling him to let the game carry on.

In-ho’s wife died of liver cirrhosis while pregnant, and after taking bribes and borrowing money for a liver transplant, he was laid off.
