Squid Game 2: Player 001 Revealed as The Frontman with a Tragic Backstory

In episode 3, we finally find out who number 001 is: Hwang In-ho, aka The Frontman from season 1. This surprising twist pulls the character back to the fold, albeit this time, he is fully engaging, as a player in the game. His presence is therefore believed to be a deliberate attempt to sabotage Gi-Hun’s quest to terminate the Squid Game once and for all. Player 001 also tries during the episode to convince Gi-Hun to give up his scheme to end the game, telling him to let the game carry on.

This twist adds a new wrinkle to the already fraught atmosphere. Squid Game 2 on Netflix also addresses the backstory of Hwang In-ho, explaining his reasons for joining the game. We find out that In-ho is stepbrother to Hwang Jun-ho, the cop who infiltrated the ranks of Squid Game workers in the last season. His joining the game is born of deep personal tragedy. In-ho’s wife died of liver cirrhosis while pregnant, and after taking bribes and borrowing money for a liver transplant, he was laid off.
