## Why This Is Such a Big Deal

Rick Moranis’ return is the headline story — after his wife’s passing in 1991, he quietly stepped away from acting to raise his two children, saying: “I pulled out of making movies in about ’96 or ’97. I just found it was too difficult to manage raising my kids and doing the traveling involved in making movies.” [EntertainmentNow](https://entertainmentnow.com/news/spaceballs-2-release-date-2027/) His comeback is genuinely emotional for fans who grew up with him.

At 99 years old, Mel Brooks — an EGOT winner and one of Hollywood’s greatest comedic minds — also returns as Yogurt, making this a truly once-in-a-lifetime reunion.

## What’s the Plot?

In true Brooks fashion, nothing is straightforward. The project is officially dubbed *“A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film”* — though actual plot details remain tightly under wraps. Like the 1987 original, the sequel will primarily parody *Star Wars* but will also take aim at *Star Trek*, *Alien*, and other major sci-fi franchises.

Josh Gad summed up the excitement perfectly on Instagram: “I was that child who saw Spaceballs before I ever saw Star Wars… It is the greatest gift of my life to help take the reins alongside Mel and this incredible group.” [Rolling Stone](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/spaceballs-sequel-april-2027-release-40th-anniversary-1235541934/)
