## What Is Spa About?

The Spa Malayalam movie revolves around the lives of people connected to La Paradise, an urban massage therapy centre. It centres on Mathan, a man struggling to separate the reality of love from his imagined ideas about it.

But the film is bigger than just one man’s confusion. Provocative in theme yet surprisingly playful in treatment, the film takes a sharp dig at the moral compass of the men who visit the spa. It is social satire dressed up as romantic comedy — exactly the kind of layered storytelling Abrid Shine has always excelled at.

The director had earlier revealed that the story was not initially conceived around a spa setting — the idea emerged from his desire to explore a space where men and women could interact without social masks. The spa became the perfect metaphor: a place where people undress their pretences as much as anything else.

## Why Abrid Shine’s Name Matters Here

Director Abrid Shine is known for experimenting with distinct storytelling styles, choosing unconventional worlds to explore intimacy and human connection. In 1983, he built a coming-of-age epic around cricket. With Action Hero Biju, he made a procedural cop drama feel deeply personal. With *Spa*, he turns an everyday urban setting into a mirror for modern relationships and private hypocrisies.

Unlike conventional romantic dramas, Spa unfolds through intersecting personal journeys inside La Paradise — the setting becomes more than just a backdrop, gradually revealing the emotional struggles and relationships shared by those who move through the space.

## Who Should Watch It?

If you enjoy Malayalam cinema that goes somewhere unexpected — films that mix humour, character study, and uncomfortable truths about modern men and women — *Spa* is built for you. The ensemble cast, led by Siddarth Bharthan and Shruthy Menon, brings a grounded naturalism to a story that could have easily tipped into farce.

The film’s realistic treatment, ensemble cast, and Abrid Shine’s storytelling style are expected to attract strong interest from OTT audiences.
