Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s Stadium against Southampton. This sees the Gunners’ impressive winning run of eight games across all competitions come to an end.

As a result, they are now only two points ahead of Manchester City in the table when they could have been four points clear. Southampton, on the other hand, are 15th with 12 points from just as many games played.

It was a lacklustre performance from Mikel Arteta’s men on the road, compared to the standards that they have shown recently. And after half time, things really started going downhill for the travelling side.

They were able to find the back of the net early in the game through Granit Xhaka. However, Stuart Armstrong scored for the hosts to make it 1-1 shortly after the hour mark to make things level with Arsenal.

Takehiro Tomiyasu and Gabriel Jesus had an off day at St Mary’s, despite their recent run of form. The refereeing was quite eye-catching for the wrong reasons too, as both sides were infuriated by the decisions made.

The most notable wrong call being the yellow card shown to Bukayo Saka for diving even though there was clearly enough contact from two Southampton defenders within the penalty area.
