South of Midnight debuted at Microsoft’s Xbox and Bethesda Showcase back in June 2023. Set in a gothic fantasy version of the southern United States and, in part, inspired by local folklore, it is a third-person action-adventure from the makers of Contrast and We Happy Few. The plot centers around Hazel, who becomes a Weaver — magically blessed with the ability to make broken ties and broken spirits whole — when a hurricane destroys her home of Prospero. Armed with these newly discovered powers, Hazel must navigate deadly beasts, learn of her family’s secrets, and perhaps find a home where she can belong.
In the game, players will harness an ancient power to heal the beasts and discover the trauma that torments them. They’ll use weaving magic to battle destructive crafters called Haints, traverse the Southern landscape, and mend the rifts in the Great Tapestry. The trashy, rotting county of Prospero and its creepy, meaty residents are the subject in an artful, stop-motion-like way. Players can look forward to a rich, haunting narrative and a soundtrack inspired by the South’s complex battle-scarred history.
An emphasis on storytelling instead of gameplay, and a playtime of about twelve hours, which is shorter than most action-adventure games, have been touted by developers. But with it coming to Game Pass, the game should strike a chord with a lot of subscribers. Running at 60 frames per second, South of Midnight is powered by Unreal Engine 4 and will be available on PC and Xbox Series S|X.
