Sony WH-1000XM6 Wireless Headphones Debut with Enhanced Audio, Faster Noise Cancellation, and New Design

Regarding audio quality, Sony says that the WH-1000XM6 has better clarity and resolution. The sound tuning was done by several award-winning studio engineers, including Randy Merrill, Chris Genringer, Mike Piacentini, and Michael Romanowski. Sony is marketing the headphones as offering “studio-level accuracy,” which we’ve heard before and don’t always translate fully to consumer products.

The headphones have 30mm drivers that are built with high-rigidity carbon fibre-reinforced composite domes, as well as a newly developed voice coil structure. The digital-to-analog conversion system also includes an improved look-ahead noise shaper, which anticipates and provides for optimal quantization of the noise while rapidly following changes in the sound. Supported codecs include SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3, as well as Sony’s DSEE Extreme upscaling and 360 Reality Audio with new Upmix for Cinema mode, which turns stereo content into immersive spatial sound.

The noise cancellation takes a step up to 12 microphones and a new QN3 HD Noise Canceling Processor, which Sony claims is seven times faster than the QN1 chip that powered the XM5. This enables the Adaptive NC Optimizer to adapt to ambient noise changes more quickly and more effectively. Driver design is also optimised to enhance noise-cancelling performance, and the Auto Ambient Sound mode has been improved from the prior generation. Call quality is also improved with the AI beamforming microphones, which help cut down on background noise and focus on the speaker.

The design has also been refreshed: the headband is wider to reduce pressure and features an asymmetrical shape to help distinguish left from right easily. The hinges now allow greater articulation, enabling the earcups to fold inward, a feature present in older 1000X models.

The XM6 will be available in Black, Platinum Silver, and Midnight Blue, all with matte finishes, and include a new magnetic-latch carry case. The WH-1000XM6 is priced at $450, which is $50 more than the XM5. The XM5 and XM4 models have since dropped in price, with the XM5 now available for $350 and the XM4 for $300, offering budget-friendly alternatives.
