Sony has officially announced a new series of $55 PlayStation 5 console covers in the colors Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple. These “galaxy-inspired” colors will be available at participating retailers starting in January 2022 and can be easily applied to existing PS5 consoles and the disc-free Digital Edition.
Simply remove the current white cover, replace it with the new one of your choice, and you’re ready to go.
In addition, new color variants of the DualSense controller, in addition to the previously released Midnight Black and Cosmic Red versions, are on the way. These controllers will be available in Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple, just like the PS5 covers.
A patent submitted by Sony in November hinted that replacement faceplates were on the way, as the corporation registered documents for an “ornamental design for a cover for an electronic device,” with diagrams of the PS5 faceplates included as examples.
Previously, the only way to personalize a PS5 was to buy a can of spray paint or a third-party alternative from firms like Dbrand, which sold $50 “Darkplates.” In 2020, that product drew the attention of Sony’s legal team, and Dbrand received a new legal threat from Sony’s lawyers, prompting the company to stop producing Dark plate shells and replace them with the more distinctive Dark plate 2.0 shells.
The covers will be available in the following countries: the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, and the Philippines.
According to Sony, additional territories will be added throughout the year, with specific release dates varying by region.
