The rumours of a PlayStation exclusivity agreement between Konami and Sony have reappeared. As early as 2020, rumours about studios that Sony would acquire started, especially when Microsoft announced its $7.5 billion purchase of Bethesda. Konami was frequently discussed, however, it turned out that it wasn’t one of the six businesses that Sony bought in 2021.
That didn’t put an end to rumours and possibly wishful thinking. Fans, in particular, wanted to see three of Konami’s most cherished and long-dormant properties — Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, and Castlevania — resurrected, and Sony stepping in to offer finance sounded like a perfect scenario. The announcement of the Silent Hill 2 remake as a PS5 system exclusive in October 2022 only served to fuel the “leaks” of a Sony-Konami collaboration.
Recently, rumours about a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake have begun to circulate, and these have been partially corroborated by statements from industry insiders. Special Nick, the host of the XboxEra podcast, speculated that an MGS3 remake could be announced at the next PlayStation Showcase. Following that, Windows Central’s Jez Cordon stated that he had heard Sony and Konami had struck a deal encompassing Silent Hill, Metal Gear, and possibly a new Castlevania game.
These rumours of a Konami version of MGS3 have been sparked by two musicians, coincidentally.
Donna Burke, the vocalist responsible for the main themes of two Metal Gear Solid games, was the first to tweet an image of herself carrying a card that read “Snake Eater.” Though it was later stated that Burke was not working on a song for a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake or any MGS project, the assumption stuck with many people.
A few weeks later, J. Scott Rakozy, the Hogwarts Legacy soundtrack’s composer, posted a small Instagram video of their rendition of the Metal Gear Solid theme. Most of the artist’s Instagram postings are about legitimate projects they have worked on, so this might have just been Rakozy having a little fun. It’s also important to note that the video has now been taken down.
