Sony has already started inviting pre-orders. They are giving a chance to their users with ‘US-based address’ to pre-order and reserve a PS5 console as Sony claims there’s a limited quantity of PS5 available.

According to Bloomberg, the original plan of Sony was to produce 15m units by March 31, 2021. Now only 11m units will be produced following production issues with its custom-designed system-on-chip for the new console.

Sony has come up against manufacturing issues, such as production yields as low as 50% for its SOC, which has cut into its ability to produce as many consoles as it wishes.

While PS5 production is expected to be higher than PS4, when aligned, this issue will hit PS5 supply during 2021.

Production yield issues will always exist, especially at the beginning of a console launch, though this does seem more severe than expected.

Daniel Ahmad further wrote: “Here’s the best way to think of the above.
PS5 first six-month production initially much higher than PS4.
Now due to yield issues, PS5 production is slightly higher than PS4.
So there will still be more supply than PS4 launch, but the real question is how high is demand?”

Microsoft has amazed the world with both of its Xbox Series S and Series X at an attractive pricing of $299 and $499. So, Sony can actually take a price cut to counter Xbox somehow and bring more exclusive games as well.

For now, we’ll have to wait till 16th September for the official details. However, it will be interesting to see how Sony counters Microsoft’s lucrative Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox All Access program.

Like the Microsoft Xbox consoles, the Sony PS5 will be powered by AMD hardware and here’s what you can expect from it:

  • Key features: Up to 8K resolution, 4K games at 60 fps, ray tracing, fast-loading SSD, up to 120 frames per second.
  • Specs: 8-core 3.5 GHz AMD Zen 2 CPU, 10.3 teraflop AMD RDNA 2 GPU, 16 GB GDDR6 memory, 825 GB custom SSD
  • Key games: Horizon II Forbidden West, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon, Souls, Gran Turismo 7, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Sack Boy A Big Adventure.
  • DualSense Controller: A new design and two-tone look, reduced weight while retaining a strong battery inside, new adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons, a new ‘Create’ button
