The new Skoda Kylaq will be revealed globally on the 6th of November, 2024, and is anticipated to disrupt the sub-4m SUV space with a low pricing strategy. In the lead-up to its arrival in showrooms, automotive enthusiast Pranav Nemade managed to get some shots of the car during testing.
The model in question is the first launch under Skoda’s India 2.5 plan. Expected to benefit from a different design compared to models like the Kushaq, Slavia, and Kodiaq, the Kylaq is expected to draw inspiration from the Elroq electric SUV. Among the key changes will likely be the arrival of Skoda’s new ‘SKODA’ lettering instead of the usual Arrow logo.
All About the Skoda Kylaq
The name “Kylaq,” which was chosen through a national ‘Name Your Škoda’ campaign, aligns with the brand’s tradition of names starting with ‘K’ and ending with ‘Q.’ The name itself is pronounced ‘Kai-lak’ and combines the Sanskrit word for crystal with a play on hair, symbolizing elegance and strength. Sitting below the Kushaq in Skoda’s portfolio, the Kylaq is under development on a modified version of Volkswagen Group’s MQB AO IN platform that also underpins the Kushaq and Slavia, but with a shorter wheelbase.
The Kylaq features a few same design elements as the Kushaq, such as Skoda’s signature grille, LED headlights with split DRLs, a large air dam, a revised bumper, and similar tail lamps. It will ride on 17-inch alloy wheels, and feature black roof rails and blacked-out pillars for a more rugged appearance, while the sunroof is optional.
While interior details are still limited, the Kylaq is anticipated to include various comfort and safety features for drivers and passengers, such as a large touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone connectivity, and ventilated seats.
The Kylaq will be powered by a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 114 hp and 178 Nm of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Skoda Auto India plans to start production of the Kylaq later this month at its Chakan plant, the same facility where the Kushaq is produced. In addition to serving the domestic market, Skoda intends to export the Kylaq to several international markets.
