PV Sindhu, Sai Praneeth reach quarter-finals, HS Prannoy ousted in Japan Open 2019

While PV Sindhu, Sai Praneeth and the men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty reached the quarter-finals, HS Prannoy was shown the exit door after a straight-game defeat to Rasmus Gemke of Denmark in the 2nd round today.

India’s top-ranked shuttler PV Sindhu survived a stiff battle against her familiar foe and local shuttler Aya Ohori in the women’s singles 2nd round of Japan Open, BWF Super 750 tournament in Tokyo on Thursday.

PV Sindhu defeated Aya Ohori 11-21, 21-10, 21-13 to reach the quarters.

Sindhu had finished runner-up at Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament last week, lost the opening game to unseeded Aya Ohori 21-11 before making a strong comeback to take the match 11-21, 21-10, 21-13 in 61 minutes.

Sindhu had clinched a similar come-from-behind-win against Aya Ohori at last week’s Indonesia Open. The India shuttler came from behind after conceding the first game 21-11.

Sindhu also extended her unbeaten record against Aya Ohori in on the tour as she has beaten her Japanese opponent 8 times in as many meetings. The three-game win at Indonesia Open was the first time Sindhu lost a game in 7 meetings to her lower-ranked opponent.

Sindhu has gone past the 2nd round at Japan Open for the first time in her career.

Sindhu had been struggling for form early in the season but the World No. 5 has looked in fine form since returning from nearly a 2-month break for Indonesia Open. Sindhu was stopped in the final of the Super 1000 tournament in Jakarta by Akane Yamaguchi.

Sindhu though has an opportunity to avenge the defeat as she may take on 4th seed Yamaguchi in Friday’s quarter-final at Japan Open.

B Sai Praneeth the World No. 23 continued his good run in Tokyo with a comfortable straight-game win over local shuttler Kanta Tsuneyama. The Indian shuttler, who outclassed Kenta Nishimoto on Wednesday, will take on Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto in the quarter-final.

On the other hand, HS Prannoy, who showed signs of return to form after beating 8th seed Kidambi Srikanth in the first-round, suffered a straight-game defeat to Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke. Prannoy was beaten 21-9, 21-15 in 49 minutes in his 2nd-round match on Thursday.
