Five years is a long time to go missing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and Simu Liu knows it. Instead of dodging the question, the *Shang-Chi* star leaned into the joke with a viral TikTok trend, poking fun at his character’s mysterious absence right before his big return in *Avengers: Doomsday*.

Liu hopped on the popular “Netflix documentary” TikTok format, where creators sit down, get mic’d up, and pretend to film a streaming doc about their bizarre situation. His caption? He joked he was filming a documentary about what his character had secretly been up to for half a decade.

### What Has Shang-Chi Been Doing?

Speaking to ScreenRant, Liu admitted even he doesn’t have concrete answers, though he offered a fun theory: the hero has probably been training hard and quietly helping people in the shadows, waiting for his moment to step back into the spotlight.

| Detail | Info |
| --- | --- |
| **Actor** | Simu Liu |
| **Character** | Shang-Chi |
| **Last Solo Film** | *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings* (2021) |
| **Gap Before Return** | 5 years |
| **Next Appearance** | *Avengers: Doomsday* (December 2026) |

### Why This Gap Could Actually Help

Interestingly, the long wait might work in *Shang-Chi’s* favor. The 2021 film has only grown more popular through steady Disney+ streaming, and two big *Avengers* appearances — first in *Doomsday*, then reportedly in *Secret Wars* — could give a potential sequel a serious box office boost. Marvel fans eager for backstory on Shang-Chi’s kung fu evolution can also explore the character’s origins on [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shang-Chi).

Rather than over-explaining his absence, *Doomsday* looks set to show a sharper, more refined Shang-Chi — leaving deeper answers for a possible *Shang-Chi 2*.
