As for the Silent Hill 2 Remake, it has been getting a generally positive reception from players and critics but some of you may be experiencing stuttering problems on PC if that is your platform. Digital Foundry has done a deep dive into the visual improvements and shortcomings in Silent Hill 2 Remake’s PC version.

More About the Silent Hill 2 PC Remake

But one of the biggest features on PC has to be ray tracing, vastly improving dynamic visual scaling — which doesn’t even exist on Sony PlayStation 5. There is a single-click option to enable hardware-based ray tracing, and the addition of upscaling technologies such as NVIDIA DLSS results in what can only be described as an appreciable visual upgrade.

Even with these improvements, the frame rate in Silent Hill 2 still chugs noticeably at times. In-certain in-game cutscenes, and interactions with ‘cloth objects,’ see the need for 30fps updates too, stuttering an otherwise enjoyable experience – indeed as we noted recently when examining every game on PlayStation Classic it can be somewhat less agreeable. But in terms of output, Unreal Engine 5’s Lumen technology hasn’t been up to scratch – we’ve seen flickering grass textures, issues with reflections, and more.

The most frustrating visual problem is the in-game stuttering, characterized by unexpected FPS drops during gameplay. This stuttering is part of a broader issue associated with Unreal Engine, which means it may not be entirely the fault of the developers at Bloober Team. Digital Foundry explained that this stuttering isn’t due to shader compilation but rather a traversal stutter caused by the loading and unloading of game objects, an issue Epic Games has struggled with in its own titles, like Fortnite.

The video also addresses several other less significant inconsistencies, though they remain noticeable. While some user-created mods for the Silent Hill 2 Remake exist as potential workarounds, they don’t resolve the more significant issues. There’s hope that the Bloober Team will provide a fix, either through an update or that Epic Games will tackle the stuttering problem themselves, but time will tell.
