Thirty years, seven films, one iconic final girl. *Scream 7* lands in theatres on **February 27, 2026** — just four days away — and the hype around it is unlike anything this franchise has seen in years. Why? Because Neve Campbell is back. And so, somehow, is someone who probably shouldn’t be.

The [Scream franchise](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scream_(franchise)), which began with Wes Craven’s genre-defining 1996 original, has been reborn in a way that feels genuinely exciting again — and this time, it’s the franchise’s own creator, **Kevin Williamson**, in the director’s chair for the very first time.

## What’s the Plot?

Sidney Prescott has built a new life in the quiet town of Pine Grove, Indiana — until a new Ghostface killer begins targeting her family, this time setting sights on her daughter. [The Hollywood Reporter](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/the-bluff-trailer-priyanka-chopra-jonas-karl-urban-1236473871/) It’s the most personal Ghostface attack yet, and Neve Campbell herself has described the arc as “full-circle” given Sidney’s journey from grieving daughter to protective mother.

The most jaw-dropping twist before release? **Matthew Lillard returning as Stu Macher** — a character who was killed on screen in 1996. Skeet Ulrich was originally supposed to return as Billy Loomis as part of a three-film arc, but confirmed he was no longer set to appear following the film’s creative retooling. Notably absent are **Melissa Barrera** (fired) and **Jenna Ortega** (departed amid cast and crew changes), whose characters were the backbone of the last two films.

Barrera was fired in 2023 over social media posts, while Ortega departed citing the loss of the original creative team she had signed on to work with.
