If you’ve been looking for your next grand, sweeping period drama on Netflix, look no further. **The Leopard Netflix** series is here, and it is easily the most ambitious Italian production the platform has ever delivered. Sun-soaked Sicilian palaces, aristocratic family drama, a star-studded cast, and the weight of literary history — this one has everything. But does it live up to the legacy of Luchino Visconti’s legendary 1963 film? Let’s find out.

This new modern adaptation of *The Leopard* (*Il Gattopardo*) spans six episodes, first announced in 2022 as part of Netflix’s official unveiling of its headquarters in Rome. This particular adaptation has been more than 60 years in the making, as the first adaptation directed by Luchino Visconti and starring Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale is widely considered one of the most epic Italian movies ever made. ## The Leopard Plot, Cast & What Makes It Special

*The Leopard* unfolds while General Garibaldi tries to take over the kingdom of Sicily in 1860. Prince Fabrizio of Salina (Kim Rossi Stuart) watches as his nephew Tancredi (Saul Nanni) sides with the Garibaldi rebels, and decides to broker a marriage between Tancredi and the gorgeous Angelica (Deva Cassel, daughter of Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel) — but in doing so, may attract the wrath of his own daughter Concetta (Benedetta Porcaroli), who is secretly in love with Tancredi.

Kim Rossi Stuart is the main attraction as Fabrizio — his political chops and moral complexity, including his priest-sanctioned adultery, make his performance more nuanced than just a despicable noble figure prone to tantrums. But the series brilliantly develops the female protagonists: Benedetta Porcaroli’s Concetta is given a true developed arc, and Deva Cassel revels in the ingénue role, performing in both perfect French and Italian. But supported by an amazing cast and breathtaking sets and exteriors, *The Leopard* sticks to its strengths and delivers a faithful adaptation of a literary classic.
