Rumours have emerged that Real Madrid are preparing to sell star centre-back Raphael Varane when the summer transfer window opens up for business to potentially fund a move for Kylian Mbappe.
Both the Frenchmen have been linked to and away from Madrid over the last few years, and this could finally be the year where we see Mbappe join Madrid and Varane leave the club. It depends, of course, on whether or not Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain manage to negotiate contract extensions successfully with their respective players.v
Madrid have been linked with a move worth near €200 million for Mbappe for years now, and 2021 could finally be the year when the youngster makes the move to the Bernabeu. Varane, on the other hand, has been linked with a move to Manchester United with the Premier League club being one of the only clubs in the race for the France defender.
Despite the fact that David Alaba will in all likelihood, join Real Madrid at the end of the season, Madrid can play it risky with the defender’s contract. However they must remember that Sergio Ramos’ contract situation is also up in the air.
Los Blancos could end up losing both of their starting XI centre-backs the same summer, with only one long term replacement. Eder Militao could step up, but has been underwhelming for the most part and is not being tipped as Zidane’s first choice should Ramos and Varane end up leaving.
Having a bunch of attacking talents at the club, Madrid should instead focus on the centre-backs to sort things out defensively before making luxury signings of the stature of Mbappe.
