Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of World Cup 2019 for 3 weeks.

Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the 2019 Cricket World Cup for 3 weeks with a fractured thumb. He had been hit on his left thumb during India’s match against defending champions Australia at The Oval on Sunday.

Dhawan had sustained the injury on Sunday but went on to score a match-winning 117 against Australia. He had gone for a scan on Monday and the report reveals he has a hairline fracture.

Dhawan was the hero of India’s win over Australia on Sunday with a knock of 117 off 109 balls. Shikhar Dhawan played through pain after being hit on his left thumb. Shikhar Dhawan didn’t take the field due to the injury during the clash against Australia and Ravindra Jadeja fielded in his place for the entire 50 overs.

Dhawan sustained a fracture on his thumb during a match-winning hundred vs Australia.

Shikhar Dhawan will therefore, not be able to play India’s upcoming matches against New Zealand, Pakistan, Afghanistan, West Indies and England – all these matches are scheduled to be played in June.

Shikhar Dhawan is a key player for India in ICC tournaments where he has 6 hundreds. In the 2015 World Cup, Dhawan had scored 2 hundreds.

India have chosen not to name a replacement in the squad, with any players removed due to injury unable to return to the fold when they recover, said the report on the official World Cup website.

In this scenario, KL Rahul is most likely to open with Rohit Sharma with Vijay Shankar or Dinesh Karthik likely to slot in the middle order. With Vijay Shankar playing India will have another bowling option in the middle overs(11-40 overs).

With Dhawan being ruled out with an injury, India will be forced to change Rohit Sharma’s opening partner when they face 2015 World Cup runners-up New Zealand on Thursday at the Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
