Americans are discovering new entertainment content from all corners of the globe, with subtitles and dubbing providing easier access to international TV shows.

Last year, South Korean drama “Squid Game” dominated Netflix viewership, with 1 in 4 Americans having watched the show. After its astronomical popularity, VPN experts at Forbes Advisor decided to look at which international shows Americans are most interested in watching next.

Sherlock takes the top spot, despite finishing in 2017

Interestingly, the top two most in demand TV shows are British. “Sherlock” (2010) has a staggering 79,080 average yearly searches, while “The Bodyguard” (2018) has 22,080 annual searches by Americans.

It is worth noting that Sherlock finished in 2017 so it is interesting that it is in poll position.  The popularity of  lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who has gained international attention following his role as Doctor Strange in the Marvel universe, may play a role.

In third is “The Killing” (2011), a Danish TV show that has amassed 13,560 searches in the US. This series follows the life of detective Sarah Lund and each series follows a murder case day-by-day.

Following in fourth position is British TV series “Happy Valley” (2014) with 12,120 searches in the US. This gritty, dark humor drama follows the personal and professional life of police sergeant Catherine Cawood.

In fifth position is “The Great British Bake Off” (2010) with 12,000 searches in the US. This show follows amateur bakers in their attempts to be crowned star baker. Each week, a series of challenges is set that include nailing classic sweet treats and creating their own showstoppers.
