Are you tired of the fact that your Mustang’s roof blocks the sound of your Coyote V8? Well, Shelby American has got you covered. In their latest run of limited-edition Mustangs, Shelby American included the two-seat Speedster variant of the mighty Shelby Super Snake. Thanks to its unique styling and slightly inconvenient hard top tonneau system, this unique Mustang was built for top-down driving.
To celebrate the 98th birthday of their founder, late Carol Shelby, Shelby American builds 98 special edition Shelby Super Snake Speedsters, like all the other 98th anniversary models. It features a raised hood that houses a supercharged 5.0-liter V8, a blown version of the familiar Coyote V8. The powerplant packs up to 825 HorsePower (HP) (615 Kilowatts) thanks to a Whipple Supercharger.
Customers will get an option to choose from either a manual transmission or an automatic version of the Shelby Super Snake Speedster. Each transmission receives unique upgrades from the makers to help it handle the additional horsepower, double the stock output of a normal Mustang GT. To ensure customers aren’t breaking their Mustangs during performance driving, the drivetrain is also beefed up to cope with this power.
Shelby American adds massive 6-piston front brakes and 4-piston rear brakes to the Shelby Super Snake Speedster to help reign in its powerful V8 engine. About its braking and tire system, a report by Auto Evolution says, “stopping power comes from a Brembo braking system, while the 20-inch wheels are wrapped in performance-spec tires. Optionally, you can go with a Penske-developed track-spec suspension system.”
How much does the Shelby Super Snake Speedster cost? Well, the package that turns the Super Snake into a two-seater costs $4,995. Including the Mustang GT, the Shelby Super Snake is based on, starts from $133,785, so the Speedster comes in at $138,780 before options. That’s almost twice as much as a Shelby GT500 ($72,900), but then, that is what you have to pay for a unique body configuration limited to just 98 examples.
