Sheffield United have sealed promotion to the Premier League, after confirming a second place finish in the Championship. The 2-0 win against West Brom confirmed that we will see the Blades back in the top flight next season.
They finished at the bottom of the table in the 2020/21 season when they were relegated to the Championship. But, after spending a couple of years in the second division, they have finally managed to make it back amidst all kinds of turmoil behind the scenes.
Sheffield United promoted to the Premier League for 23/24
“We’ve worked so hard for this all year, and to do it at home in front of our own crowd is so special,” Sander Berge told Sky Sports.
“We want to give back to the club and fans, I came here when we were in the Premier League, and now we’re back where we need to be.”
The club were hit with a transfer ban during the January transfer window for defaulting on payments for signing Rhian Brewster from Liverpool. That has since been lifted, but the likelihood that the players will receive promotion bonuses between £250,000 and £400,000-per-man are doubtful.
With Prince Abdullah having put Sheffield United for sale, costs are being cut at every turn. And it is unlikely that the players will receive what they are owed until the sale procedure has been completed.
