Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has informed the club that he wishes to leave, as per Corriere dello Sport. The Switzerland international was very impressive during the Euros, and has spent most of his time at Liverpool as a bench-warmer due to the options available ahead of him.

“The important thing at this moment in my career is to be able to play regularly, but that hasn’t always been the case in the last three seasons,” he said. “This is why I told Liverpool that I feel ready for a new challenge. They accepted my wish and will seriously consider the offers that will come. They will not stop me.”

“I’d love to come back to Italy, and I’d like to play for Lazio”, he added.

He added: “I’m only 29 years old, I have played in some of the best leagues in Europe and I would like to continue being a part of them. I’m not yet thinking about the end of my career, it’s a future I imagine far away. We will see what destiny has in store for me.”

The player was also appreciative about the work that Lazio have done over the last few seasons, and agreed that Maurizio Sarri’s style of play would suit him if he were to make the move to Italy. Liverpool would want to make about £15 million from the sale of Shaqiri, and fans would want that money to be reinvested into the squad.

Shaqiri himself would want to return to Italy, with Napoli also being interested along with Lazio. Talks regarding a permanent move will begin in the next few days.
