With the 2024–25 Serie A season now complete, it’s time to recognise the standout performers from an action-packed campaign. From record-setting goalkeepers to clinical strikers, this is our definitive Serie A Team of the Season.

Napoli emerged as champions, securing their fourth Scudetto after edging past Inter in a thrilling title battle. Meanwhile, Empoli, Venezia, and Monza faced the drop following difficult seasons at the bottom of the table.

Serie a 2024 25 team of the season

After reviewing individual performances throughout the year, we’ve compiled a best XI featuring players who consistently outshone their peers in every position.

Serie A 2024-25 Team of The Season (3-4-2-1)

Goalkeeper – Mile Svilar (Roma)

Mile Svilar recorded the best save percentage (77%) in Serie A this season among goalkeepers who made over 10 appearances. The Roma shot-stopper also registered 16 clean sheets, sharing the league’s highest tally with Napoli’s Alex Meret.

Mile svilar

Based on the expected goals on target (xGOT) metric, Svilar prevented 7.5 goals more than an average goalkeeper would have been expected to concede — the second-best figure in the league, trailing only Torino’s Vanja Milinkovic-Savic (12.6).

Right Centre-Back – Amir Rrahmani (Napoli)

Amir Rrahmani featured more than any other Napoli player during their title-winning 2024–25 campaign under Antonio Conte.

At the heart of the defence, he led by example — averaging more clearances (4.7) and aerial duels won (3.4) per 90 minutes than any of his teammates. He was a dominant presence in the air too, winning 69.6% of his aerial battles. Among players to contest 100 or more aerial duels, only Como’s Marc Kempf (71.7%) posted a higher success rate.

Comfortable on the ball, Rrahmani also led Serie A in touches (3,195), passes attempted (2,769), and passes completed (2,521) over the course of the season.

Centre-Back – Evan Ndicka (Roma)

In a sport where consistency and availability are invaluable, Evan Ndicka embodied reliability. The Ivorian centre-back was one of just two outfield players to feature in every single minute of the 2024–25 Serie A season (3,420 minutes), joining Lecce’s Federico Baschirotto in that rare feat. While his durability was impressive, it was his defensive contribution that truly set him apart.

Ndicka dominated in defensive duels, winning 81% of his tackles (26 out of 32) — the best success rate among players with at least 30 attempts. He also led all Roma players for blocks, possessions regained, and clearances.

Left Centre-Back – Alessandro Bastoni (Inter)

Alessandro Bastoni’s blend of technical quality and attacking intent has long distinguished him from more conventional centre-backs — and the 2024–25 campaign reinforced that reputation.

The Inter defender posted the highest open-play crossing accuracy among defenders with at least 10 attempts, finding a teammate with 43.7% of his 64 open-play crosses (28 successful). It’s an impressive figure for a centre-back and highlights his tendency to drift wide and influence attacking moves.

Bastoni also topped the charts for assists (five) and chances created (24) among central defenders, regularly operating as a deep-lying playmaker for Simone Inzaghi’s team.

His heat map reflects just how advanced his role was on the left, showing both his attacking involvement and the defensive responsibility of covering the spaces behind Inter’s marauding wing-back, Federico Dimarco.

Right-Midfield – Riccardo Orsolini (Bologna)

Bologna’s ninth-place finish in Serie A may not have caught the eye, but Vincenzo Italiano’s side ended the season just three points shy of sixth and celebrated their first major trophy in over half a century by winning the Coppa Italia. At the heart of much of their success was Riccardo Orsolini.

Riccardo orsolini

Only Mateo Retegui (25) and Moise Kean (19) found the net more often than Orsolini in the league this season. The Bologna winger scored 15 goals in just 30 appearances — averaging a goal every other game — with no teammate managing more than eight.

The 28-year-old enjoyed the most productive Serie A season of his career, racking up 19 goal contributions (15 goals, 4 assists) — his highest combined tally in a single campaign.

Central Midfielder – Éderson (Atalanta)

Despite strong speculation over a summer exit, Éderson delivered another outstanding season at the heart of Atalanta’s midfield.

The Brazilian played a key role in orchestrating attacks, featuring in more build-up sequences that led to goals (16) than any other player in Serie A — at least three more than his closest competitor.

Éderson

In addition to scoring four goals, Éderson ranked second among midfielders for possessions won (186), placed fourth for total passes (1,932), and was among the top five for duels won (181), underlining his all-round influence for La Dea.

Central Midfielder – Tijjani Reijnders (AC Milan)

Although Milan’s season fell short of expectations, Tijjani Reijnders emerged as a standout performer for the Rossoneri.

Among Serie A midfielders, only Scott McTominay (12) outscored Reijnders, who netted 10 goals. Remarkably, the Dutchman became the first Milan central midfielder to reach double digits in open-play goals in a single Serie A season since Antonio Nocerino achieved the feat in 2011–12.

Reijnders also made a significant impact defensively, with just three midfielders recording more interceptions than his total of 38.

Left Midfield – Scott McTominay (Napoli)

When Scott McTominay made the move from Manchester United to Napoli last summer, few anticipated the major impact the Scottish international would have in Serie A.

McTominay was instrumental in driving Napoli to their fourth league title, contributing 12 goals—the highest tally by any central midfielder in the division, despite being deployed as a left midfielder in our lineup—along with four assists.

Scott mctominay

Notably, he scored more goals during goalless moments than any other player this season (eight), helping tilt matches in favor of Antonio Conte’s side. The Serie A Player of the Year also led all midfielders in both duels contested (400) and duels won (208)..

Right-Forward – Moise Kean (Fiorentina)

After years of untapped potential, Moise Kean finally made his mark on the big stage in the 2024–25 season, netting 19 goals for Fiorentina in Serie A. Only Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui (25) scored more in the league.

Kean’s 19-goal haul was the highest by an Italian player for Fiorentina in a single campaign since Alberto Gilardino matched that tally in 2008–09. This marked only the second time in Kean’s career he reached double digits in goals, and his first since scoring 13 for PSG in 2020–21.

He led all players in Italy for non-penalty expected goals per 90 minutes (0.59), showing that when on the field, Kean consistently found better scoring positions and took higher-quality shots than anyone else.

His goals were not only frequent but impactful, directly securing 17 points for Fiorentina — the greatest points contribution by any player in the league this season.

Striker – Mateo Retegui (Atalanta)

Mateo Retegui, the recipient of this season’s Capocannoniere (Paolo Rossi Award), enjoyed a remarkable 2024–25 campaign.

The Italian striker netted 25 goals in 36 Serie A appearances — the highest total ever recorded by an Atalanta player in a single top-flight season. Retegui also led the league in multi-goal performances, notching three braces, one hat-trick, and even a four-goal haul in a single match.

Mateo retegui

Uniquely, he was the only player in Serie A to score at least 10 goals with both his right and left foot.

In addition to his scoring prowess, Retegui created 38 chances from open play, a figure surpassed by only 12 players across the league.

Left-Forward – Marcus Thuram (Inter)

With his younger brother Khéphren joining Serie A last summer, the spotlight was on Marcus Thuram to claim family bragging rights. While both had respectable seasons, it was Marcus who earned a place in our Team of the Season.

The Juventus midfielder became only the second French player to score 14 goals in a single Serie A campaign for Inter, equalling Youri Djorkaeff’s 1996–97 record. Impressively, all of Thuram’s goals came from inside the penalty area, matching Romelu Lukaku for the joint-highest total (14).

Beyond scoring, Thuram was also a creative force, producing 39 chances from open play — a tally bettered by just nine players in the league.
