Sergio Ramos’ exit unlikely to affect Varane’s Real Madrid future

Real Madrid announced the departure of their captain, Sergio Ramos, yesterday. The legendary centre-back ends his 16-year spell at the Santiago Bernabeu by leaving the club as a free agent.

According to Marca, that is unlikely to have an effect on Raphael Varane and his desire to leave or stay at the club. The defender is currently on international duty with France for Euro 2020. And he got to know of the news along with the rest of the world.

The Frenchman only has one year left on his contract with Real Madrid and could leave the club if a suitable offer arrives. He recently changed his agency to CAA Base, who have big English clients like Kyle Walker and James Maddison. Varane has long been linked as a target for Manchester United, and Chelsea are also interested in the player. So, a move for the player could materialise from English clubs.

Varane himself has not yet commented about staying or leaving the club. Possibly when asked, the only comment that can be expected right now is the reminder that he has a contract of one year left. Negotiations with Real Madrid regarding a new contract have not begun either. The capital club will have to try and reach an agreement with the player, or risk losing him for free next summer if they don’t renew his contract.

Madrid will only have three first team centre-backs if Varane joins Ramos on the way out. They will have to invest in a new centre-back if they indeed end up losing both their first-choice defenders in the same summer.
