Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets is expected to leave the club this summer when his contract runs out. There were doubts about whether he would continue beyond this season, and reports have now emerged suggesting that he will end his stay at his boyhood club.
Talks took place for a renewal between him and the board, but there was no agreement to continue for another season. Now, Luis F Rojo of MARCA, as well as Javi Miguel of AS are saying that Busquets will be leaving the club in spite of Xavi wanting his former teammate to stay for the next year.
Sergio Busquets to leave Barcelona at the end of the season
Barcelona’s last attempt to extend his contract saw a one-year renewal being offered, with another year based on the number of appearances. Moreover, they presented him with only one-third of his current salary in the new deal. While money was not a factor, it did little to convince him to stay.
Sergio Busquets has internally communicated his desire to leave at the end of his current deal. And now, an official announcement is expected in order to confirm his departure.
A move to MLS or Saudi Arabia could be on the cards for the 34-year-old, who has won everything there is to win playing for club and country. However, he is yet to decide where the next chapter of his career will take him.
