Sergio Busquets has announced his retirement from the Spanish national team following their exit from the 2022 World Cup. The defensive midfielder player his last game for Spain at the tournament, and has now officially announced his decision.
He follows Luis Enrique in leaving the Spanish national team, having been replaced by Luis de la Fuente shortly after. However, Busquets has been an all-important presence in the heart of the park and replacing him will be a big task to manage.

“I would like to announce that after almost 15 years and 143 matches, the moment has arrived to bid farewell to the national team,” wrote the 34-year-old Barcelona stalwart on his social media platforms.
“It has been an honour to represent my national team and help lift it higher.”
“At 34 years old, Sergio Busquets puts an end to this great international career. From the Royal Spanish Football Federation, eternal gratitude for this brilliant path. Thanks Sergio. Thank you Captain,” the statement from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) read.
With Spain, Busquets won the 2010 World Cup before winning the 2014 Euros. He captained the side in their most recent era, and has now made way for the new generation to make it through.
