After the lengthy ban to Juventus’ Nicolo Fagioli, Sandro Tonali has also expected to be suspended from professional football following his betting scandal. The midfielder will be ruled out for 10 months, following an investigation carried out by authorities in Turin.
He will be unavailable for the remainder of the 23/24 season for Newcastle United, who paid AC Milan a sum worth €70 million for the midfielder this summer. In addition, his €8 million per season wages will also be suspended during this time. Newcastle are considering legal action against Milan, but haven’t formally announced the same yet.
Tonali will also be ruled out for the Euro 2024 tournament next summer, which he could have featured in.
Sandro Tonali to serve 10-month ban following betting scandal
Alongside Fagioli and Sandro Tonali, Nicolo Zaniolo is also expected to be sidelined after he was also suspected of breaking such rules while he was at Roma. He recently signed for Aston Villa after leaving Galatasaray, and could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines like his compatriots.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Harry Toffolo have also been hit with suspensions after their involvement in betting. As a result, involvement in gambling has now become a growing concern for clubs with an increasing number of players being ruled out of competition for extended periods upon being found guilty.
Tonali will be undergoing rehabilitation for gambling addiction while he spends time away from the pitch. The expectation is that he will be back at the start of next season, once he has served his suspension.
