The reveal has become the subject of much scrutiny in tech circles – and new revelations shed further light on what an Android XR headset might look like their technical details, and when to expect them.
More About the Samsung Android XR Headset
While no other information was shared, Unpacked 2024 attendees are finally getting some details on the XR platform that has been in development and is slated to go live this year. The XR headset development, involving collaboration with Qualcomm and Google for mixed-reality devices from Samsung was first announced in February of last year. The official announcement on the launch of this platform was made only last week, July 10th.
Business Insider In a recent post, an internal timeline for the Android XR headset based on Qualcomm’s technology and being built by Samsung is revealed. The developer release could take place in October, followed by a consumer version launch as early as 2025. It will be based on Google’s new AR software and is designed to counter the Apple Vision Pro, with the internal code name “Moohan.”
The Vision Pro was finally raised in February, and initially, the headset had been set up to be launched back during quarter one of this year. But Samsung repeatedly postponed the release of the device, concluding that it was not ready to be launched. Though details on the launch model are still slim, we can expect more insight as we move toward that June 23 release date.
According to speculation, the headset will have an OLED screen, hand and eye tracking with eight cameras monitoring outside of it, as well as potential AI-powered evolution. And it could run on the newer, more powerful, and more efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor that was announced earlier this year. The tech community eagerly anticipates the developer launch and awaits further detailed insights.
