Samsung Display has secured a new design patent for a display device, identified as D1066344. The patent, originally filed on January 10, 2022, has now appeared in the US Designs IP Portal. It also debuts a new repositionable camera system that can move a camera from the front to the back depending on how you use the device. Thus innovative design is a new way to embed cameras inside a display.

Samsung’s Latest Patent Reveals Innovative Display with Repositionable Camera for Front and Rear Usage

Samsung had filed design applications for similar concepts in May 2019. The latest design was submitted for international registration in the US in January 2022 by the South Korean tech giant. It looks like the idea is designed to improve the placement of cameras on display devices, which could be of use to smartphones, tablets, and newer screens, among others. The patent describes a display device with a two-position camera system.

This describes one configuration where the camera system can be mounted on the front and on the back in another configuration. This design helps eliminate the need for separate front and rear camera modules, permitting a single camera setup to take high-quality selfies as well as standard photos. The patent features images revealing the system adaptable to multiple angles. In some of the illustrations, broken lines indicate non-claimed elements but this appears to mean that the camera positioning system remains the primary focus.

These have priority claims tied to May 2019 filings that suggest Samsung has been polishing this concept for several years now. The design could potentially be incorporated into future foldable or rollable display phones. However, while Samsung frequently files patents hinting at new technologies, their registration does not guarantee commercial production. Many patents serve as research foundations, and it remains uncertain whether this innovative camera system will be implemented in upcoming Samsung devices.
