Samsung starts sampling GDDR6 20Gbps and 24Gbps

The South Korean giant has always taken its memory business quite seriously and they have been one of the best makers of GDDR6 memory. Samsung has recently started sampling 16Gb (2GB) memory modules based on the newer GDDR6 memory standards with a higher bandwidth of 20Gbps and 24Gbps to its partners.

These new modules have been spotted on Samsung’s product catalogue, as pointed out by @Olrak29_ but we do not know which products will actually use these new high bandwidth GDDR6 memories or the time span of launch. Currently, the AMD Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs use the Samsung GDDR6 16Gbps memory which is only limited to a 256-bit memory bus.

On other hand, NVIDIA RTX 30-series flagship cards use newer GDDR6X memory from Micron with 19.5 Gbps bandwidth and a 384-bit memory bus. So, these upcoming 20Gbps and 24Gbps modules could be launching in upcoming GPUs such as AMD’s RDNA3 based graphics cards and on the budget/mid-range NVIDIA Lovelace GPUs.

The current highest memory bandwidth seen on the RTX 3090 could be dethroned by a new rumoured RTX 3090 Ti featuring 21 Gbps memory with a launch slated for January 2022. On the other hand, the highest memory bandwidth we see with GDDR6 memory is on the Radeon RX 6900 XT LC with 18.5 Gbps speeds.
