Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 logs will help Samsung to determine Warranty

Foldable phones are fragile, and we are all aware of that. However, Samsung has gone the extra mile and has taken extra precautions against false warranty claims since they are still a thing. As it turns out, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is logging all acceleration-based free-fall events. Samsung engineers can look into these logs when a customer wants to file a claim. This data can help the engineers determine if the damage should be or should not be covered in the warranty.

At least a couple of Galaxy Z Flip 3 users have reportedly confirmed that the engineers at authorized Samsung service centers are checking the free-fall logs of the device before repairing it (via SamMobile). The first user had their foldable’s inner screen cracked along the hinge. The engineers determined that the phone had dropped from dangerous heights at least three times. The last drop was ten hours before the crack started appearing.

For example, when a Galaxy Z Flip 3 user takes their phone in for service, Samsung will use the accelerometer log to determine if the damage is under warranty. Thus, necessary reasons for paid or free repair will be presented.

Samsung engineers will be able to detect how many meters the Z Flip 3 sent for repair has fallen, with free-fall control based on accelerometer data records. If the phone fell more than 1 meter away, unfortunately, the company will not be able to repair the device for free.

False warranty claims are not unknown. It happens many times that users drop their phone and something inside gets broken. And if there aren’t any major dents or marks on the outside, they may go on to claim a warranty to get the phone repaired for free. Samsung is now taking some precautionary measures against this practice. By logging the free-fall data of the device, the company can tell exactly when the user had dropped it.
